    CL Ad

I can't believe some parents . . . . it took all I had not to reply to this parent What are people thinking? $15/day & in the parents' home?!?!

"Hello. We are in need of childcare asap. I work part time and my boyfriend works odd hours. We can only afford to pay 15 a day. We would like for you to watch her in our home. We have a crazy schedule so you would have to bear with us . If you would like more info, then please respond to this ad. "

I've seen some of those types of ads too in my area.
Don't you just like how parents will tell us what they will pay?
For those that only want to pay next to nothing because of some sob story, I wonder how many of them spend money on cigs, all the latest electronic gadgets, fancy cars, designer clothes, have 1,0000 tv channels etc. But when it comes to their kids, all of sudden they have no money?

For a college student who has to do nothing for this child but provide supervision, this might be an ideal opportunity.

The ad states $15 per day but doesn't necessarily mean ALL day. It could be only part of a day since mom only works part time and BF works odd hours. I guerss I might take that as mom could go to work for the 3-11 shift but BF doesn;t get home until 5. Then providing care from 2:30 ish- 5:00ish doesn't seem so unreasonable.

I also think she may have stated $15 oer day becuse most child care providers bill by the day and do NOT give breaks to those who work part time or with odd hours.

It also doesn't say how old the child is. If she is toilet trained and older, $15 a day for part time supervision/care really doesn't seem so out there...kwim?

I agree that $15/day is a low rate, even for group care by an inexperienced provider in the provider's home (at least in my area), but I can understand listing their desired rates in the CL posting. As a last ditch attempt to find replacement childcare, I resorted to posting an ad on Craigslist in hopes of finding new leads. At first I tried not putting an amount in my ad but invariably I would get several replies from nannies wanting $10-$15/hour, which we simply can't afford (at that point, I should quit and become a babysitter/nanny myself). I finally started listing a payment range, starting at the lower-average weekly rates for my area and going up to the maximum amount that we could afford in order to avoid wasting respondents' time or my own. Once I did that I got fewer replies but the respondents were much more on the same page as us.
