    Blindsided

I have never posted before but have been reading posts for a while. Currently I have 4 children. Three are in school and one is 8 months. I watch my 3 year old niece. I also watch another family members child 18 months. The 3 year old mother is a teacher so summers off. So today the other childs mother came to me and told me her and her husband are taking off a week at the end of the month and they only get 4 weeks of vacation (I do not get paid for vacation). She then told me that they are going to take off two weeks in September. so I should figure out when i am going to take off my one week this summer. Really....I didnt know what to say I couldn't believe it. He would be the only kid I watch in the summer and now they are going to dictate my vacation and because he is family I dont get paid very much....I guess I am going to have to figure out a way to tell her that is not going to fly. Cheers to you guys cause after the last 5 years watching others children and being taken for granted I will never do this again. I just have to say I admire all of you who can handle all of it with a smilehappyface

I guess I don't handle this sort of stuff. My contract states that I get paid for parents vacations and I set my price so I get paid well.

Sounds like you may need to come up with a new contract so you feel less taken advantage of.

Most providers last longer when they don't watch family members and don't provide heavy discounts and such. When you price yourself so low and take so much mistreatment from the families, then yes, you will get burnt out.

Were it me, I'd take the whole summer off anyway. Best of luck to you!

I have a teacher parent but she works part time during the summer for the summer school program. I usually end up with the little ones most the summer so it works out nice for me. But in the event that my parent did take off that entire summer and want to come back I'd make them pay a holding fee. Something each week to hold the spot and if they would like to still bring that child in during the week they may do so at a agreed time and date. Doing daycare with family doesn't work out very well. My sister being a single mom and me wanting to help her out but also setting rules and guidelines down on daycare policies did daycare for my niece as well and that was a mistake. It lasted 2 months when she did not pick up her daughter nor call me to let me know she needed to work longer hrs. She just thought bc I was her sister I wouldn't care or mind. I chowed her bum out and drove her daughter to my moms who my sister lives with. Needless to say my sister throw a fit and refused to pay me for that week. In which she was forced to find alternative care on very short notice. She did eventually apologize and did pay me. I however; learned never to mix business and family again.

Family is the worst! They think you owe them something. It really ****s when parents know they have you pinned under their thumb! I have been in that situation a few times now. I hope they realize what an asset you are to them and fly by your rules!
