    Loose Parts?

What types of things do you use for loose parts for imaginary play? I have kids ages 1-2-3 so what would be good for this age group? I recently put out paper towel rolls and they went crazy playing with them!! Now I need some new ideas.

    Thanks

oh, the possibilities are endless!!! I ADORE loose parts! Add them to different areas...some in one, some in many...and watch the possibilities happen!!!

    stones/pebbles
    pine cones
pieces of tree trunk cut into rounds
any cardboard tubing, cut up into rounds if too big
    pieces of scrap wood
    boxes
    cardboard
    seashells
    packing peanuts
extra "pieces" to games, puzzles, etc.
    fabric remnants-big and little pieces
    containers from any and everything
    old cd/jewel cases
    tires
    empty playdough containers
    individual snack size serving containers
PVC pipe, cut into pieces, with elbows/connectors
old wrapping paper, ribbons, cards, etc.
    yarn
    nuts and bolts
old hardware from around the house - doorknobs, hinges, etc.

        winter ideas with loose parts:

freeze water in baking pans/dishes, add additional ice cubes, some polar animals or even people

add pieces of evergreen branches to the block, art, science and dramatic play areas. add additional accessories as suited to the area

        Example:

blend ice in a blender or, preferably, use a snow cone maker, set out in clear bin, add loose parts of pine cones, evergreen clippings, people and/or animals you have science/dramatic play/language/social-emotional.......

This may be a dumb question but are these the same as sensory bins?

No they're not the same thing. Loose parts are objects that can be used for play in many different ways. Like a box. It can be used as a house, a car, a train, a bed etc etc. My kids were playing with paper towel rolls and they used them as flutes, spy glasses and homes for small animal toys.
