For "WELL ONLY" Childcare and COUGHS

Okay so basically copied Nannydee "well only" child policy (thank you Nan ) and showed it to my parents to see if they were willing to go along with something like this, they all agreed it would benefit everyone in the long run...but one parent was concerned because her daughter has had a cough for over 3 weeks now...would they be excluded the whole 3 weeks and have to pay?? I told her as long as cough is not contagious and would need a note from dr saying so....but for the well only providers what do you do in this situation?

I know im already gonna run into trouble and everyone else will say dont watch family, but when it comes to my niece who is always sick, i really dont have much i can do. But maybe she wont be always sick once shes away from the crowded public daycare setting shes currently in and in my smaller group.... to hope

It's a fine line because with kids that have allergies, you're going to have coughs and runny noses.

I think Dr.'s notes being required will help. That will help determine whether it is allergy and whether it's actually being treated at all.

With certain Upper Respiratory Illness, the cough lingers 3-4 weeks after they have been on a round of antibiotics.

But are they still contagious when they are coughing?

I think it depends on the reason for the cough in the first place. This info is copied from a Dr Sears' advice site: http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/chi...oo-sick-attend

          COUGHS
While most colds end the cough still lingers, keeping babies out of daycare and parents out of work. But all coughs are not automatically stay-home illnesses. A dry, hacking cough that neither awakens baby nor is associated with fever, pain, difficulty breathing, or other cold signs is not a reason for quarantine. These nuisance-type coughs linger on for two weeks, are rarely contagious, and seldom bother the child or her mates, who themselves may also be coughing. Then there's the baby who coughs a lot at night but seems well during the day except for annoying throat-clearing sounds and may have several similar episodes during the allergy season. This child suffers from postnasal drip, she is noncontagious, and this seldom is a reason to stay home from daycare. Ofcourse, any cough accompanied by fever, chills, and coughing up of green or yellow mucus warrants medical attention and absence from daycare. Your baby can return to daycare when the fever subsides and she feels better (usually in a few days), though the cough itself may linger for a week or two.

          Hope that helps a bit.
