Possibly Sick Child and Annoying Parent

Annoyed-probably.
concerned- yes. (Parents don't get it and part of your job is bonking them on the head and dragging them to read your policies.)
I would take this as a cue to get a working thermometer, STAT. If your policy states anything about fever, you need to back up any reason you are calling the parent with numbers. As far as the poor little guy, you know what to do. Keep him away from others, and if his sneezing/runny nose is out of hand, that may be enough to let the parents know he needs a Dr appt or allergy med for his own comfort. (And prevent spread of germs to everyone else).

And, I apparently know NOTHING about children. After 10 minute conversation with Dad on phone....I give dcb lunch and not 5 minutes into it...he pukes all over my carpet and all the way to the bathroom! Ahhhhhhhh! I hate puke!

When children are just laying around not doing anything, not wanting things to eat, etc. call the parents and say to them they need to come and pick up their children ASAP and they will be seperated from all the others, til pick up. More than likely something is brewing inside them.

I hope you told parents about the puking and how if they 'think' he is suffering from allergies from now on you will need a note from the dr stating that, Do you enforce the no return to daycare till symtom free for 24 hours? I let parents know that know matter what they say to their children more often than not I will find out that they have been sick after a parent has claimed otherwise and lying about symtoms or hiding it is means for immidiate termination. How long did it take dcd to come pick up after your first request? I've gotten to the point of being so 'annoyed' w/parents bringing sick kids that im seriously considering adding something to my contract stating that if they dont pick up within the time allowed and the child is 'sick' on my furniture or floor the parents are responsible for the fee of the carpet shampooer and also for my time to do the extra cleaning, i know when i cleaned houses on the side i seriously made about $25 $30 an hour, im wondering if that would make a parent pick up instead of ignoring thier sick child?

Annoying parent! Sorry about the vomit. . . I hate it also! I hope you called dad back right away to explain the vomiting & to have chikld picked up immediately! I especially hate throw up on carpet. Not fun to clean up!

We have one of those forehead swipe thermometers & I LOVE it. Yes, it was about $40 but we've had it almost 3 years & have had NO problems with it. Love it! I highly recommend it.

oh me too! I got my temporal thermometer at Sam's club a couple of years ago...and LOVE it! Just one swipe on the forehead and you've got an accurate temp. It's come in VERY handly on a couple of occasions when a parent has tried to slip a sick child in here with a ultra-quick drop-off and comment, "if he's not feeling well, call me"....I'm able to grab that thermometer and get a temp in about 3 seconds - and have sent the child right back home before they even get their coat off

Awesome ladies! That was my next question! What is the brand of your temporal thermometers? I had already decided I was going to get one of those!

I'm glad I didn't over-react. They tried to play it off as allergies and I'm like whatever, I know kids better than that! Because I couldn't PROVE the fever...I was just going off of feeling and he did end up eating a banana for me and seemed to perk up for a bit. I'm not kidding though, as soon as I set his lunch down in front of him...the banana instantly came back out! :-( I felt so bad for him....he went running for the bathroom (THANK GOD he knew to do that)....he started crying almost as soon as he was done. ;-( Poor little guy!

As soon as the puke came, I immediately called Dad and tried to not sound like I was gloating by saying "Yeah, he just threw up!" :-) He was sweet as pie though when he came to get him and thanked me for being on top of my illness policy and enforcing it!

MissNikki....in no way did I think you were telling me that. I was referring to dcd. Thanks for asking though...I can come across way wrong and that is totally not my intention! :-)

Temporal Thermometers Are Awesome

I love my new temporal thermometer; hubby got mine on sale at BJ's and then he had a coupon for it, so we paid under $20 for the one we have. It's really handy for my own teenage boys who are forever saying they are sick when we wake them up for school. One little swipe, oops, you're fine, get UP! LOL!

It really peeves me when someone acts like you just want to send their kid home because you have nothing better to do. I hate it when you know a kid is sick and the parent acts like you have no idea what you are talking about and then you get stuck cleaning up puke. Poor little guy needs to be home with his parents where he is most comfortable.

I have all first-time moms who are a good decade younger than I am. I have four boys, all teenagers except our little 21-month old "surprise". I have a little bit of experience with sick kids. I kind of know what they look like. I love it when one of my moms acts like it's my first trip around this block when they tell me that it's teething that is causing their baby to puke, have runny diapers, and run a 102 degree temp

! It's just funny.

I'm glad dcd came and got the little guy. Sounds like he appreciated it, which is good.

The brand name of our temporal thermometer is Exergen. I think we got it at Wal-MArt. Best purchase ever!!!
