    Laminate Flooring And Daycare

I finally got the laminate florring down in my dining room and family room/daycare room. Now I am looking for ideas to make it more kid friendly.

I currently have an 5 x 8 oval braided area rug in front of the furniture. I also have a 5 x 8 oval braided rug in the back half of the room where the kids have a table, kitchen set and toys. The kids use all the floor space in the room.

A couple ideas I am considering:

Purchase 2 same 5 x 7 area rugs and seam together along 1 end using seam tape, and placing in the back area when the kid stuff is. But not sure how to do this. Carpet tape? This would give a much bigger area that is cushioned.
I am also thinking to do this with 2 same area rugs for the area in front of the furniture.

Another thought...to purchase a full size eggcrate mattress topper and make a slipcover to go over it and place it on the big floor area that is not covered by the current area rug in front of furniture. I just need to come up with something to put underneath so doesn't slide/move. I could just roll up at end of the day.

I am trying to keep my newly decorated room from looking so daycarish. I considered a 4 x 8 tumbling mat but they are way too expensive.

Any ideas on connecting 2 area rugs together along one edge....how to do it?
Any ideas on making a mat out of some type of foam.....how to do it and keep it from sliding?

I purchased a few pillows (bed size) and have them to use as floor pillows.

What about one of those road map rugs? You could roll that up at the end of the day and tuck it in the hall closet or wherever. Mine is about that 5x7 size. I wouldn't try connecting them, just lay them butted close together. I'm pretty sure they make bigger ones too.

OR....you could get a remnant of carpet at a home improvement store and roll that up at night. If you're worried about it slipping, they make rubber mats for under slippery rugs.

I got 2 light weight carpets 8x10 at Garden Ridge for $49.99 each. They have several colors. I got a teal color. I don't know if you have a garden ridge near you, but if you do go check them out. They roll up easy and are very light weight.

While I am sure the foam mats would work, I don't want my newly redone room to be daycarish.....I want it to be my family room that I do daycare in.

I personally use the more neutral and "homelike" rugs in my play area.
I have the large burgundy with beige and floral print that you commented on a long time ago that you liked.....it was less than 100 at walmart.com and is
9X11....you could get smaller for cheaper. I have 4X5 rugs in my block area (sage green and brown) and art area (beige and brown) that I bought at target for $20. They really add a feeling of warmth and "home" to the playspace and work with all of my other stuff.

There is a neat little hide and seek toy which works real well on wood floors. I saw it at walmart, apparently you give the child a carrot toy which has a sensor and the bunny goes around the room looking for the carrot.... kind of freaky but looks fun. I have no tried it myself but might get it for my son for christmas
