    Lice

I got a call from a DCM that one of my SA girls was found to have lice over the weekend.

She was not in my program Th or F of last week. I did wash everything, but it was so nice outside last week I am not even sure that she was in the house at all last week. I am possitive we are lice free.

The Mom did ask when she could come back, and my answer was when the 'nits' are all GONE!! and not one second before.

Not only have I had ZERO experiance with lice (and would LOVE to keep it that way) I am not in a million years about to touch someone who may still have it. I want to tell her I require a Dr or Nurses note that she HAS BEEN CHECKED and is lice free. Just the fact that she has be 'treated' is NOT ENOUGH for me.

    What is your lice policy?

Lice is a big problem in our school. Fortunately none have come home to my daycare yet. I am not sure what the school policy is on lice, but mine is:

Lice - child needs to be treated and nits removed before return.

I will check children's hair periodically, especially when a notice comes home from school.

DD1 got lice from her daycare when she was about 3. She has very thick hair, and it was a beast to get rid of. We would keep her home, get rid of it, she would be infested again a week to 10 days later. I was ready to shave her head! Another little girl had it, and she went away for two weeks to grandmas house. Grandma got rid of hers, and we got rid of my dd's.
Give a little love to a child, and you get a great deal back.

Cleaning thoroughly is sooooooo important!! The most over looked item that re-infects is car seats. (This includes the actual seats of the car where a child leans their head back.)

I dealt with Lice alot when I worked in Head Start. You get over the creepy-crawlies quick but the key to actually ridding it is to clean everything and make sure ALL nits are removed. It is a long process that if done correctly will prevent re-infestation.
