Johnny keeps it for as long as he wants it. Societies that force sharing in this sense are communistic at the core. Children learn early that they can get a toy from a friend just by complaining that *he's not sharing*.
Now, if Johnny uses this as a power play and says he's going to play with it all day, I'll find a favorite toy of his that's currently in storage and bring it out for his friend. Then I'll thank his friend for waiting till Johnny is finished, all while we play with the new toy.
