Update On Baby Who Is Always Medicated

I just talked to my licensing lady and told her about this DCM. DCM wants her 13 month old on Tylenol, Orajel, and Dymatap 24/7. I haven't given any of it to him while he's here. I do not feel comfortable knowing he's constantly medicated. She told me a few weeks ago that "he can't function if it's not in his veins." She knows I don't give it to him, but reminds me every morning that it's in there and that I should.

My licensing lady said that I am not required to give meds at all, and that most providers are getting away from giving them. She also said that if DCM is going to bring meds in his bag that I have to lock them up every day. That is not something I want to do, especially since I don't use them.

My question is...how do I get this through DCM's head not to bring them? She's an airhead and will put up an argument.

easy take them, lock them up and don't give them back. Then she wont have to bring them in every day.

Did your Lic lady say anything about it needing to be reported to CPS? This sounds horrible, poor baby..

Tell her you will keep them at your house, lock them up and never use them. Tell her you will let her know when you "run" out.

Sounds a bit fishy that the child needs to always be medicated?? I cant even imagine why. how does the child act when with you and NOT on medicine? Im assuming she gives medicine right before he comes so you probably dont see the real him until after noon!? How will this lady know if he is ever sick, fever? Poor baby!

Simple. "My licensor said there are specific rules regarding medications and childcare therefore, you are no longer allowed to leave them here. If you do not agree with this, please call my licensor, here is her number ***-***x."

If I tell her I'm going to lock them up, she'll probably get mad because some of them are prescriptions that she'll want to use them at home. I'm just going to tell her to keep them at home because I won't give them here.

When he's here and NOT on medicine, it varies. Some days he's soo happy, other days he screams non stop. It almost makes me wonder if he could be withdrawing from them on the days he's crabby?

Today I noticed a prescription in his bag that said it was for pain for mouth sores. I've never seen him have any mouth sores...It was from 2 weeks ago.

Licensing lady asked if this is her first kid. It's actually her 3rd, but she does not have custody of her other two. This one is from a different father who there is no contact with. Red flag?

Licensing lady also said that it "may" be something to look into as far as reporting. She said to see how she reacts today and go from there.

Another weird thing is...DCM has NEVER told me when his last dosage of ANYTHING was, so that's another reason I won't give them here.

Tell her you need a doctors note stating dosage and how much to give and why. I would honestly say, if your child needs to be medicated this much then he must be sick and not allowed to get others sick at daycare.

She blames everything on teething. She wants him on Orajel and Tylenol constantly for his teeth. He has some separation anxiety, and if he lets out one little whine she says "oh his teeth are bothering him he needs medicine." Yesterday she told me she that she only fed him rice cereal and Pedialyte all weekend because his nose was runny and she didn't want him getting dehydrated.

The mouth sore prescription I never even knew about until today when I saw it. She has never said anything about it. There is also a prescription for congestion...again...she never said anything about. The only meds she tells me to give him are Tylenol and Orajel. Knowing she's pumping him with all this stuff makes me sad!

I think that if I were in this situation, I would cut out all diaper bags from here on out. You never know what parents put in their diaper bags. While I was attending a health and safety class, the teacher pulled out a diaper bag and gave a demonstration.
In the diaper bag the following items were found: (even though this was just a mock, it was really found in a home daycare by licensing)

                    Nail clippers
                    Lighter
                    Cold medicine
                    Adult mini packs of Tylenol
                    Diapers
                    Wipes
Molded bottle of formula, which resulted in molded socks, clothing and other misc items
                    One single cigarette/

It looks like mom was using this as her personal purse as well. You should ALWAY know what comes through your front door.
I would also state in you PHB that if a child is on medication, the parent MUST personally hand you the meds, along with doctors diagnosis, treatment plan and all parents must sign permission to administer form each and every time their child gets put on a new medication. Also NO over the counter medications will be given at daycare without a doctor’s diagnosis and treatment plan.

I went to a class one time and it was on different things about diaper bags and such. One dcp had went through the bag to look for something and down in the bottom was a little baggie of green stuff. The provider didn't turn them in but........told them not to bring the diaper bag back. Leave everything for her to put in a tote or something.

The moms of my dc babies keep alot of stuff in their diaper bags too. Solution:

They keep the diaper bags outside on my porch!!! If they dont like it ....well then take all the no-no stuff out!!

This is what I have done for years. I don't want to be responsible for anything left in them and most of the dcps don't bring anything...just the ones where one parent drops off and another picks up. I have a covered porch and they are left on the bench. No one ever has a problem with this.
