2 Naps A Day Seems Too Much

I have a new DCG that just started today. She is 11 mos old. She arrives at 8:45am and leaves at 3:00pm.

DCM says she has nap at 10am-12pm. Then goes down for another one at 1pm-3pm.

I feel it's too much and she is not spending much time awake while she is here.

Am I wrong?

I feel now that i have to adjust all of my snack times and lunch times aswell.

She is a great baby and didnt fuss once today. I would just like to spend more time with her.

Any ideas?

I'd wonder how much sleep she's getting at night. I'd probably try to make her 10-12 an 11-12.

I think in general an 11 month old should take 2 naps but I can't imagine them being ready for a nap 1 hour after they wake up from one. Even my 6 month old doesn't start to get tired until about 2-2.5 hours of awake time.

I'd try to get her to take a shorter morning nap and maybe get her down by 9:30 (thinking mabye she is up by 7ish at home in the morning).

I had a 12 month old that would get here same time 8:45. I fed and had him straight to sleep by 9:15. Child woke up at home at 6am. I then let the child sleep until 11:00 and would then lay the child down again at 1:00 with the rest of the kids..

My 10-15 month crowd naps from 9-10:30 and 12:30-3. HTH!

That sounds like it is average for a child that age. I understand your feeling of not spending enough time with her, but I'm sure mom would rather have her sleep on your time rather than her time. I had 2 younger siblings when I was in middle school. My mom was finishing up her teaching degree when the last was born. Prior to the last year mom and dad worked there schedule out so that no one had to go to daycare, but mom's last year they couldn't. Mom always felt better knowing that the baby slept most of the time at daycare. Mom and dad always had the girls up a couple of hours before daycare in the morning and it was nice that the baby was awake from pick up until bedtime. My mom felt "guilty" enough having to send the girls to daycare, but she would have felt worse if my sister would have slept the majority of the hours she had on mom's watch.

I would put her back down when she arrives. 845-1030ish and 1-3pm. She needs the sleep at her age. It really isn't your fault she comes for short hours that happen to be during the times she needs to sleep. She'll adjust as she gets older and have lots of time to play.

I would not move the lunch, etc. around her. I only take kids that can fit into out already existing schedule. However, I would tweak her naps to work with the groups. I would move her first nap up by one hour. If she is only staying up an hour between naps, to me that is showing she is not getting enough sleep or not getting to sleep soon enough. Hopefully that move will help her have a good window where the group can eat together and have some play time together. Other than that, I would let her sleep. To me, sleep is more important that extended period of play time. At least she is happy when she is up!

My 12mo DCK sleeps 12 hours at night and 2 two hour naps a day. My own child at that age got 8-10 at night with 1-2 during the day. I have always thought this kid was sleeping too much, but it makes my day easier.

My son at that age got up at 6am wenr for a nap from 10-12 then up til 3 nap til 4:30 then up til 8. He was my most sound sleeper. What tim e does your dcg get up in the morning? Go to bed at night? And just out of curiousity, what are your lunch and snack times?

My other concern is that on Tuesdays, I have a little girl to take to preschool at 9am and pick up at 11:30am. so she misses her morning nap.

My snack time is 10:30 and my lunch is at 12:30.
Maybe i could adjust my feeding times by half an hour.

It's only day 2 so we will see how things go!

I have an 11 month old. She still takes 2 naps a day. And then I watch two just a bit older, and they only have 1 nap. I think it depends on the kid.

My daughter first nap is usually 9:00 - 10:00, and then again from 12:30 - 3:00. if she doesn't get those naps, she will sleep from about 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, which messes up her night.

Based on this I'd give her a nap from 9:30 to 11 and then 1-3. Then she only misses morning snack and if she's coming in at 8:45 she probably eats something before coming and it doesn't interfere with your preschool schedule.

I am just amazed that an almost 1 year old can be awake for only an hour and be ready to go back to sleep! If mom asks I would explain how you are balancing it out a little - right now she is up for 3 hrs (7-10am), then sleeps for 2 hours (10-12), then up for 1 hour (12-1) and then sleeps for another 2 hours (1-3). I agree they need their sleep but they should be spaced out a little more and a child that age should be able to stay awake more than 1 hour in the middle of the day!
