I Had My First Interview Today

So I had my first interview today for an 18mo old boy...who is totally cute. But wanted to get your take on a few things. First he takes two naps a day and the mom wanted to know how I would accomodate his morning nap, since in my schedule I have one nap time after lunch. She said she wanted him to take one nap a day...but he's leading the schedule! She voiced concern over me offering foods and if he didn't like it would I offer another option. What would your response be to these questions?

The two nap a day thing is easy enough. At 18 months he would be slowly transitioning to a one nap a day schedule anyway.

Just move his morning nap back 30 minutes every couple of days (from 10:00-10:30, 10:30-11:00, etc.) until he is able to make it until after lunch. Very easily done.

For the "foods" thing, I would stick with "Only for medically diagnosed Food allergies" like they will be doing his ENTIRE school career.

I'd mention how many snacks you serve each day and be sure to let her know that you have no intention of ever letting him go hungry.

Now, that said....If I knew a child genuinely disliked a certain food I would have a substitution for the day (between me and the child since my DCK's eat lots of things for me that they won't eat at home. Secrets in the sauce :.

It benefits nobody to have a hungry, cranky toddler just to make a point...

I can't see you doing that either so I think precious will be just fine.

Good luck!! I hope it goes well for you!

As for the napping, I would tell mom what she wanted to hear and deal with getting the child on my schedule.

As for the food I would hVe said
All of my meals are planned ahead of time. I prepare melas that are kid friendly and always have something children love ti eat. Your child will have the choice of eating what he want from his plate and will never be forced to eat something he didn't like. I always welcome second helping of food and will make sure that as long as it's something heathy he could always have more. But I don't do specialized meals unless your child has doctors diagnosed food allergies.

He does have a peanut allergy according to mom. Also, when do you guys serve water. She was concerned about the juice I provide with snack.

Ask mom how much water child consumes at home in a day and you'll be sure to offer water throughout the day to accomodate. I serve 4 oz. with juice on occasion and after a child consumes their serving, water is offered.

Peanut allergies can be very serious. I would have a much more serious conversation with mom, as simply being in the same house as foods that contain peanuts or were manufactured in plants that contained peanuts can cause a reaction. Some sort of treatment plan should be in place if this is a life threatening reaction to peanuts.

When I had a child with peanut allergies I did not serve anything with peanuts in it or any items where contamination could have occurred

It's actually more simple than you think. Also are you on the food program?

Yes I'm on the food program. Also do you guys child proof your bathroom so the kids cannot go in. She asked me if I lock the doors of the bathrooms. I would have to totally not be paying attention for him to wonder off.

You'd be surprised at the dedication they can have to get into an open bathroom. I don't lock mine but I train the kids to always keep the door closed and knock before entering to check if someone is there.

Napping...I normally wean from the morning nap somewhere between 18 months and 2 years old just like Catherder. I'd tell mama that he can have a short nap in the AM for a few weeks as you adjust his schedule. It isn't that hard if he's ready.

About allergies....I would have another talk with mom about the extent of his allergy. I offer allergy or diet restriction substitutions at my discretion. I have a vegetarian and two that eat fish but not meat so I sustitute often. NOT for dislikes however unless it's something they really hate. I have a 2 year old that turns green just looking at a banana (wierd!!) so I always give her an apple when we have bananas.

I agree with the other posts on transitioning of the nap time. Find out more from mom on the peanut allergy. Be careful that if you give in too much on these seemingly small items that she will want you to give in on other things in the future.
