    Cell Phones

so I need to come up with a cell phone policy at first I did not think this was going to be a problem. I would like to know what possible issues should I be preventing.

So far the problems that have been created is the children that do not have a cell phone hover over the one 7th grader that does as he is text-ing people, also the other day this boy took a picture and then sent it to a friend.

This is what I have so far ...

Electronic devices: Bring all electronic devices at your own risk I will not be responsible if it gets lost, broken or stolen.

Cell phones: In addition to the above. Upon entering the day care home children will be required to turn the cell phones in to me they will be placed in the cell phone basket. Children may use them at the table during free play time only. Under no circumstance shall any child use any recording audio or video on cell phone or other wise. Under no circumstances shall any child use a camera of any kind on a cell phone or other wise. Children may or may not be allowed to use their cell phone during a field trip, this will be decided on a case by case bases

I wouldn't allow them at all.

If a child is young enough that they need adult supervision in a day care they are too young to be responsible enough to manage a cell phone in care.

I will never allow children in my home with a recording device and an internet capable device. I only allow my staff assistant to have a phone in the day care when they hit the two year mark here. I have to have a couple of years of working with them before I can trust them enough to bring a cell phone into the playroom.

How about no cells out of backpacks? Bring cells at own risk, but leave it in your backpack unless it's an emergency, which there shouldn't be at daycare.

easy, no cell phones allowed. No need to for a phone. If he needs one let him you your house phone.

I understand nannyde's and sharlan's desire to not have children use them at all the thing is I have no problem with the child(ren) using them to text or call people. The only problem was with the other children not giving space and with the child sharing pics with people parents would not think pics would be sent to. I have permission to take pictures of all the day care children.

I don't allow anything from home at all. Unless it is a comforting item for a small child in need. Too many problems with items from home. Also I just hate when these young kids even have cell phones. In my opinion if a child is under adult supervision then they don't need a phone.

IF you are certain you want the responsibility and are going to allow them I would make the parents sign a wavier.

I see the potential for trouble, BTDT. The kids who don't have one will continually bug the one who does - let me see, let me see, let me see, while reaching and grabbing. Then you'll have the no, it's mine, don't touch it, pushing away argument

My 8 yo has one, but I've never seen it as it stays in his backpack.

I agree with Nanny, if they are responsible enough to be carrying a phone and texting friends. They are responsible enough to not need me. I have made an exception. I had a boy whose dad was away for work in other countries. Some kind of biologist. He would call from a sat phone 2 or 3 times a week to his 7yr olds cell. If it rang child answered it But that's different than texting sara to see if Joey was going to the movies. You know?

A letter explaining the new electronic and cell phone policy is going out today I am also making some small changes in regards to food and homework.

The first part of the letter say what the policy is now and has a space for parents to sign and return to me (printed two for each family one to sign and one to keep). The back of the letter is a summary of the changes the part about cell phones says ...

Electronic devices and cell phones: These are completely new policies please ask me if you have any questions. If even after implementing this policy cell phones continue to create a problem then I will update the policy accordingly. Problems may or may not be caused by the user him/herself. Many/most daycares do not allow them at all.

Thus leaving me more to change my mind about allowing them at all next week if need be. Funny thing is that only one child has one and he is the oldest and needs the most supervision.

                            Yes to this.

We need to start SAYING that. Parents need to UNDERSTAND that. The State regulations need to reflect that and the PAY for kids as they get older needs to INCREASE because of that.

My state really believes that the older a kid gets the less adult they need. They allow huge ratios in centers and in home child care providers for older kids. The pay for the older kids is really low EXCEPT for before and after programs where they can charge a premium rate for the few hours a day they are open.
