I personally Don’t think it’s ok to force a child to sit down at circle time but recently my boss told me to do so. Is this normal for daycares to do because I just don’t feel good about it.
Forcing a Child to Sit Down

Depends on the child's age for me. I work with a mixed group of kids. Between 2 to 2.5 most kinds will sit down and join in on their own. Before 2 if they sit down they are welcome to but for the most part, no I don't have them sit. But if they a 3 or older, then yes they are expected to sit down. If they refuse or are disruptive then they are removed from the area and depending on their behavior put in time out. After time out they are asked to rejion the group.
Circle time is only 10 -15 minutes long and they can see and hear from the time out seat but they just don't get picked to participate in the activity, only watch. Plus only part of the time a child is really sitting, if you are including movement, so asking them to sit for a few minutes at a time shouldn't be a big deal.
In the end I am in charge of every one safety and i need to be able to see every, having them sit allows me to do that.👍 1- Flag

I feel that circle time and preschool activities are just that...pre school. We are preparing these little ones to be ready for elementary school, where they will be expected to listen and obey the classroom rules. That includes sitting down quietly when told to. A kindergarten teacher cannot be expected to deal with children who think they make all their own decisions and can run around and not listen to instructions. Learning to listen to instruction should start long before school starts.- Flag
