    Possible food allergy?

I have a 12 mo DCB who has allergy problems. When he enrolled, mom was just starting him on baby food, and had him on predigested (hypoallergenic) formula. She said he was allergic to dairy and soy. She asked after a month if I could get him on the food program. I said with his allergies, I prefer she bring the food for a while. She said she couldn't start him on table food because she doesn't cook at home and she only eats cereal. She had 2 other kids with the same allergies, so what did she feed them when she was with their father?!

One day last week, she forgot babyfood. After talking to her, she suggested I puree the baked chicken, beans, and cucumbers that I made for lunch. It worked, and he ate it. At pick up that day, she said her doc told her to start him on whole milk. She also asked if I could enroll him on FP again. I said I can find out more when I talk to the FP lady. Mom then tells me that he can have milk but cannot EVER have cheese. Said her 2 older kids have never had cheese in their lives. Does that make sense? To not have cheese but can have milk??

I looked back at my contract, and she wrote nothing in there about him being allergic to soy, but told me that when he first started. Hasn't said anything about soy since. I'm beginning to think she doesn't know what she's talking about. FP lady said a doctor's note is required. I wonder if she'll even get that.

She also said that I can try cheese and anything else I wanted with him. If she is THAT concerned about cheese, why would I try it here?! I don't want him to have a reaction on my time!

yeah she knows nothing. Sorry, but that's what it sounds like to me. For most lactose-intolerant people, milk = bad, cheese=iffy, depending on a lot of factors. But straight milk isn't okay. If it's a full allergy, nothing dairy is okay, not milk, not cheese, not anything.

Sounds to me though like she's full of it and doesn't know diddly about the allergies. no offense, but really...she sounds a bit nuts.

This is exactly what I was thinking. And on another note-she says her other 2 kids have the allergy so bad, but they are from a different father than this little guy. She herself does not have any allergies. She told me that she thinks they have milk allergy because she drank cow's milk while she was pregnant and never did before...

The doctor she takes him to is one of the best in town. If he knew the boy had such severe allergies, I don't think he really would have suggested she start him on cow's milk.

          I agree.

My 4 yo had a lot of breast milk/dairy/soy allergies at birth. He was on a special formula for 18 mos. Cheese was one of the first milk foods he could eat. Now, he can drink straight milk.

Weird....my if Dh drinks even a quarter cup of milk he will be in the bathroom all day and have major cramps for days but he eats cheese like crazy!!! He has never actually seen a doctor about that specific subject, he just avoids milk. I have no experience with allergies but thought I would mention that.

I'm also thinking she is just looking for a free meal. She tells me every single day that all she eats at home is cereal, and on a rare day she'll eat a tv dinner. I know she's living off the system but of course can walk in with a brand new cut and color, with brand new clothes.

This is far from the food allergy problem, but she has always paid me with her boyfriend's checks. I heard from a friend that knows her boyfriend that he moved 2 hours away. She is still paying with his checks...

lactose intolerance. That's all. Many lactose intolerant people can handle cheese just fine because the lactose is already partially digested, in a way--the cheesemaking process changes it and makes it easier to digest. I bet he can eat yogurt, too.

Nope, not really that likely. There is some possibility that allergies can be caused by things consumed in great quantity during pregnancy, but it would have to be a pretty large quantity and the studies are inconclusive--and the few results suggesting a connection are more likely correlational than causational. Otherwise, you would have a federal recommendation against pregnant women eating peanut products, etc.

Babies aren't allergic to breast milk, they are allergic to things you eat that pass into the breast milk. You could have eliminated the dairy and soy from YOUR diet and he probably would have been just fine (and saved you oodles of money). Just a little food for thought if you ever have another allergic kid.
