Can you tell me the website for a free EIN number? I had one a few years back, but when I closed my business my accountant said I would have to have a new number if I started again. The one I had was free, when I try now to apply I'm being told it cost 249.00 . Please help

No, don't pay for it. You can go to the IRS.gov website and have one for free in a few minutes. BUT I was under the understanding that once you had one, it was yours for life. You could try to apply for one and see what happens. It is free, so don't pay anything.

I just tried and it wouldn't let me get a new one....says if I'm changing business name, I can use the one I have happyface
