Expenses Make Refund Go Down?

I'm using turbotax and everytime i enter an expense it makes my refund go down!

Should I not enter any expenses?

I assume this is the case because you are eligible for the earned income credit where it is the case that higher expenses can reduce your refund. The earned income credit is goofy in this regard.
