Tax Question But Not DC Related-Anyone?

If DH goes work and leaves early for the day to go to a Drs appt, can he write off the mileage going from work to the Dr and then from the Dr to home? Or wouldnt that count because he would have to drive home anyway if he didnt have to stop at the dr?

    Medical expenses

You can deduct mileage costs as medical expenses when you itemize your tax return. You'll need a lot of medical expenses before you will be able to deduct them on Schedule A.

In your situation your husband could only count the extra miles he drives to the doctor. In other words if it's 10 mile commute to and from work and it's 16 miles from your home to his work to the doctor's office and then home - he can count 6 miles for his medical expense.

Ok, so if I am driving to the Dr and leaving from home, and then returning home, and it's 20 miles round trip, then I would count the whole trip? And just so I am understanding this right, since his dr is on the way home, and may only take him a mile out of his way, he cant count it because he would be travling to home anyway?

Yes, from what i get out of Tom's post, i believe in your case you could count the entire 20 miles since you work from home. Your husband could count the one mile extra he'd be driving however.

            Car Expenses

If you drive to the doctor from your home and it's 20 miles roundtrip, you can count 20 miles toward your personal medical expenses on Schedule A. This is not a business expense. If your husband's commute is 30 miles roundtrip and he drives 2 miles out of his way to go to the doctor he can count 2 miles towards personal medical expenses.

Now I need help - what does SAHM and KWIM mean?

Thanks. A SAHM or a family child care provider can claim personal medical expenses in the same way.
