Is it OK to give out total amounts paid for specific children to the State revenue service?

In my opinion, no one from the state revenue service would ask for such a thing via phone. They would request it by letter.

Before giving any information, I'd ask for their name and department, and then call the MAIN number and ask for them (not a number they give you).

Yes, I think that would come in writing. Where would they even get your phone number? There didn't used to be a place for all that info on tax forms.
