    Extra Curricular Activities

Tom, what is the rule for claiming our own child's dance lesson costs or anything similar such as music lessons, cheerleading costs etc..

Can we use the costs as a deduction? What about uniforms for sporting activities such as football or hockey equipment.

How about art lessons or an after school tutor?

You can't deduct any expenses associated with items bought for your own children. If you take the daycare kids to a museum, dance class, etc. and pay separate admission, I'd deduct the cost of admission for your own child who comes along. There is no IRS ruling on this point, but I think the case can be made that you can't leave your child alone and the daycare children are getting the benefit of interacting with your child at the time.

Uniforms for sporting activities for your own children are not deductible. If you buy an ad in a sports program or have your business name put on the tee shirts of a team, you can deduct this as advertising.
