Parent terminated mid-year, talk to me about w10s and such.

I have all my parents year end statements ready to go. I have some hiccups and was hoping for help with this one. This is my first year filing taxes and having this issue.

I have one parent who I terminated due to gross misconduct/disrespect on her part. It was done on the phone. She left all her child's belongings, supplies and medical equipment (they are in storage, I refuse to pay shipping to her). It ended very badly and I refuse to go to her home or let her in mine for any reason.

Anyway, I don't want to mail her the tax information (even certified) without having a signed copy of her statement from her but I know if I offer for her to come get it she will not. I know it is her responsibility to provide me with a W10 and that would be great as I could get a signed copy for my records of her year end statement. I highly doubt she will provide me with one, but can she still claim dependent care expenses without giving me one? If she does what does that mean for me? I will still claim her payments as income, right? It was about 2k. I have all her checks (I mobile deposit) and receipt copies, etc in my files.

I'm new at this too, but I think she can 'claim' that you refused to give her the info?
But as long as what she claims matches makes sense with what you've claimed (i.e. she doesn't claim that she paid $10,000 and you only report $8000 total), I would assume there's nothing to be concerned about for you.

And outside of that, since you are claiming what she paid and you have records to match what you're claiming, she would be the one with the big problem should there be an audit, not you.

      This might help. http://www.tomcopelandblog.com/2011/...-receipts.html

In 20 years of doing childcare I never gave parents end of the year receipts unless they asked for them. Most didn't. I just reported (and had records) of what they paid me.

I had one parent that skipped out on me. Never came one day and never heard from her again until the end of the year. She did this to a couple of other providers too I found out later. She didn't leave owing money though. She left a message on my phone about getting a statement stating how much she had paid me. I knew I didn't legally have to give her any information and I was mad at her so didn't. She never called back. Never heard anything from anybody.

I just posted you an answer, a Tom Copeland article, and my post said it has to be approved by a moderator??? Huh???

Bottom line, you don't have to give her anything legally so I wouldn't bother.

Anytime someone posts with a link to Tom Copeland, the post needs to be moderated.

I have NO clue as to why but it's the link to Tom that does it.

I usually see them fairly quickly and approve them but if it should happen again in the future to you (or anyone reading this) don't panic! It's not you.

Oh okay, thanks! It has done it other times and I probably was posting a link to his blog. I just never connected the dots as to why every so often my posts didn't show up.
