    Unlicensed vs. Licensed in Wisconsin

I am a unlicensed childcare provider caring for only 3 children. Can I write off the portion of my home the children use? Or do I need to be licensed to do that. What can I write off as a unlicensed childcare provide operating legally?

Here's a thread that might help

If you are not licensed ( I don't have to be to have 2 children in NC) but you claim your income can you take any deductions?

If you are legally unlicensed, then yes, you may write off expenses. It's somewhere in the tax rules, just don't remember.

IRS Publication 587 Business Use of Home says that to can claim home expenses, "You must have applied for, been granted, or be exempt from having a license, certification, registration or approval as a day care center or as a family or group day care home under state law."

Anyone know where I can find more info on write offs? I'm in Wisconsin too, and plan to open an unlicensed daycare in my home.

Assuming you are not in violation of Wisconsin's state child care licensing rules, you can deduct the same things that licensed providers can. Here's an article I wrote: http://tomcopelandblog.com/whats-ded...-care-business
