I recently put a sign up after 5 years of doing daycare legally. Know the village is telling me that they're going to charge me extra money for garbage pickup because im a commercial business. I know that they can't charge more for property tax but can they do this for garbage? Not mad just curious.
Getting Charged More for Garbage Pickup

My town tried to tell me they would charge me more, too, after I called and complained for the umpteenth time about the mess they made when picking up the trash. I told them to go ahead, then I could really complain about not getting what I paid for ::. I did look it up, and it was in the town ordinance that, yes, they could charge more if they wanted to.

I don't know what your state/city laws are, but my garbage service tried to bill me commecially also when I opened. They said it was becasue I was a business and did not live in the home I ran my childcare from. I called them and threw afit saying I was zoned as "residential" and since child care is a gray area as far a businesses go since most daycares are run out of people's homes, I wanted the same rate as everyone else in my area who were also residential and not commercially zoned and they agreed. Maybe you have to just be firm. IOur garbage service bills according to how big of a container you have and I only require a regular size can , not a dumpster so I guess you should check with the zoning office and then make your case to the garbage company. Good Luck!- Flag

I think you should check your zoning. Is your home zoned for residential or commercial? If it is zoned as residential and it is a home business then they shouldn't be able to do that.
I mean - if you started selling Pampered Chef or Tupperware? Are they going to increase your garbage fees then?
It is a home based business - not a commercial business - I thought there was a difference.- Flag

I had this issue about 8 years ago,... I flat got ON TO the garbage guy for leaving a mess, he said,.. hey If I dont want to pick up your business trash then I dont have to. I said,.. hey I operate a small business out of my home without a storefront! I create LESS trash than my elderly neighbors,.. I cloth diaper, compost, recycle, and donate anything usable to local shelters,... do you really want to go there???? My little old 2 white trash bags a week are less than ANYONE else on your route and you know it as much as I do.
he was careful from then on..

Thanks everyone. I live about 2 hours from NYC. I am zoned residential and as the day goes on this is bothering me more. I don't see how they have the right just because I added a sign. Not for nothing but I currently only have 2 dck's. They can't tax my property any differently so why should they be able to charge more for garbage pickup? My recycling pile is huge yes but the actual garbage is very low. AND half the time we don't even get it out in time. So even the every 2 weeks is a small amount compared to some neighbors. Ughhhh- Flag

i lived in a city where we went from being able to have as much trash as we wanted in any kind of bins we wanted to being issued one bin that all the trash had to fit into. it didn't matter if you had a family of one or a family of ten - you got one bin of the same size. if your trash wouldn't fit in there with the lid closed, you had to pay for an extra bin - and they WOULD pass your house up if the lid was opened/overflowing or leave any trash that wouldn't fit inside sitting on the curb. it was a big adjustment, but apparently they can do what they want.
i live in the county now and i can put a cardboard box out there full of trash or just sit the trashbags by the curb and they'll pick it up. it's different everywhere.- Flag

Garbage
Cities can charge more for commercial garbage pickup. However, check your city law because it may only apply to child care centers. Certainly you can argue that you don't have more garbage than a normal family with children. The examples from providers who responded here is educational. Sometimes all it takes is to raise your voice and push back. Family child care is usually zoned for residential areas so you can argue that it can't be treated as commercial. If they come after you they should come after all home-based businesses (writers, car repair, etc.).- Flag

Roll Off Containers
Places can cost more for professional rubbish collection. However, check your town law because it may only apply to childcare facilities.Last edited by Blackcat31; 06-04-2012, 09:04 AM.- Flag
