    taxact - form 8829 question

taxact asks for the Total indirect expense to be input, then says it will apply the T/S percentage to the total. So if my total Home repairs and maintenance for this section is $2400, that is what I enter into taxtact not the T/S of $811?

I know it seems like a dumb question but I have gotten myself a little confused because the other entries for this section required me to do some math (I wasn't open for a full year and had to figure out the allowable portion of mortgage interest etc).

Tax Act will take the percentage of your expenses for you, so you will want to enter the total expenses and let it take you down. Otherwise, you will end up getting your t/s % on the $811.

However, as a side note, I don't enter some of my home repairs as an indirect expense, but as a direct one. If the repair is something that will benefit the daycare AND my family, such as a repair to stairs used by both, I will put it as "indirect." If it is something whose only purpose is for daycare (or that is being repaired due to damage by daycare that would not have happened otherwise,) I place it as "direct" expenses.

Thank you - I will look at the list I think some of it is direct and I need to adjust.
