    Tom- VA Monthly Housing Allowance

My husband is considering going back to school. He is former military and would qualify for VA benefits, which would include a MHA (monthly housing allowance). Would the amount he recieves for the MHA be taxable income? I know when we were active military the BAH (basic allowance for housing) was NOT taxable income. But I'm not quiet sure about the MHA.

I'm not sure if the MHA would be taxable or not. Since I'm not sure, I won't guess. Ask the VA.

My dh just started back to school and is getting a post 9/11 GI bill that has housing assistance. I'm not sure on the taxable part either, but thought I'd let you know about that GI bill incase he was deployed after 9/11. They pay school and housing based on the amount of time deployed. My dh gets 50% of tuition, 50% of books, and 50% of base pay housing based on his amount of time deployed. Between that and financial aid, he actually got back $120happyface!

Thanks, this is good info to know. He did serve ine tour overseas after 9/11. He will check with the VA as to exactly what his benefit amt is. I was reading up on it and thought he would get 100% of the housing and tuition covered, but I guess it may be less. Thanks again ;-)

Here is the chart for based on number of months deployed. My dh fell just under the 12, so he gets the 50% instead of 60%, but hey, every little bit helps!
