    Special Clothing or Shoes

    Hi there...

I have a large in home daycare and teach a near by nature camp program to the same group of kids throughout the summer.

In order for me to do this, I have to purchase a new pair of hiking boots, sun hats, and often buy clothing that I only wear for daycare.

am I able to write any of this off????

    Clothing

Unfortunately, no. Clothing is only deductible if it's something that's not suited to be worn outside of your business. Examples would be a fireman's clothing, policeman uniform, etc. Even though you may only use the clothing you cite during day care hours, you could still reasonable wear them at other times.

There is one way to do this Tom, don't forget what you told me!

I have shirts made for my day care. That is what I wear for work everyday! They have my day care name printed on them. Now I have my clothes for work and can deduct the shirts as an advertising expense!

Plus, no having to think about what to wear, ruining my good stuff, and looks professional, like a uniform.

No disrespect to you Tom, I just don't think it's a nice tax rule.

so if I order scrub shirts that have my daycare's name on them, then they can count as an expense?

Yes, you can deduct this as advertising, not as clothing.

Scrubs, like those worn by nurses, could be counted as deductible clothing because they are not suitable to be worn outside of your home.
