When applying for an EIN, it asks if you are a sole proprietor or if it is a joint partnership. Would I choose sole if I am the one who is running the daycare in my home, or joint because my husband and I are putting money into it, but he is not helping with the care of the children. I am confused! Also do you need to apply for a Doing Business As license? I am in MI.

I am in Michigan as well and I have a DBA and EIN. Here's what I did:
Went to the court house, asked to register as a business. Filled out the paperwork (2 pages I think) and got my doing business as name right then & there. At the same time they asked if I wanted an EIN and I said yes so that was also done. There is a charge but it's under $20.
As far as sole proprietor/joint I have no idea. -

You are automatically a sole proprietor when you care for children. You can file later to be a partnership or corporation. However, the vast majority of providers should remain as sole proprietors. Being a sole proprietor has nothing to do with whether your husband is working with you or not.
Whether or not you must file a DBA depends on your city/county. Ask your county office.Comment
