In MMK--the "date placed in service". Is that the day I began using the home for business purposes (as in, the day we bought the house/day business began) or is it the first day of the year (if we were doing business the previous year)?

In other words, if I started doing daycare in January of 2010 and we're still in the same house, what do I use for the date placed in service?

date placed in service means the day you first started using your home in your business. In your case, January 1st (I assume), 2010.
