    T/S% and Dog House

My wife started a daycare this summer. We took 2 months to convert our house over to Daycare. We converted our entire garage to a full kids playroom. We have a very large dog and preiously he had a kennel inside the garage with a dog door out to his area outside. Because we needed the garage for daycare and we live in Las Vegas we had to move the dog outside with shelter. We spent $500 on a dog house with A/C. Since this dog house was only needed because we started a daycare and is used by the dog every day we do daycare can we consider this part of the T/S%?

    doghouse

Nope. The IRS considers dogs and cats as too personal to be able to claim expenses associated with them. If you bought a leash or fence to keep the dog away from the children that would be okay. I understand that you only built the dog house because of your business, but it's still not deductible.

What about fish or turtles, for a science area? They were gotten and set up for the daycare.

        Fish

Fish, turtles, mice, gerbils, etc. can be deducted as a business expense as long as you are incorporating them into your curriculum to help children learn. Even ducks, chickens, geese, and other farm animals could be a business expense if you are promoting your program as a farm-environment where children learn about animals.
