Teacher Brings Kid with the WORST Breakfast

This morning DCG walks in with twizzlers in her hand. As soon as her mother, who is a teacher, walks out, I tell DCG (2 years) that it has to be thrown away and she can have a healthy breakfast. Of course she cried, but got over it when I gave her a bowl of non sugary cereal with raisins.

This mom and I have talked before about school lunches and how bad they are, but yet she brings her 2 year old with candy for breakfast. In the past she has come with cookies, rice crispie bars, and tootsie rolls-usually on the days dad brings her.

Mom knows I serve breakfast every day. They live only 3 blocks away. DCG can't be THAT hungry before 7:30!

Mom doesn't want to deal with mornings. I have one that used to be like that, but is getting better.

I would stop it at the door. The other kids will see and want it too.

I have one mom that does that. I tell dcb-3 to put it in his cubby and he can have it later when he goes home. He doesn't throw a fit. Sometimes its a twinkie, cocoa puffs, oreos. Not the kind of things he should be having for breakfast.

Can I ask you why you wait until the mother walks out the door?

In order to put a stop to bringing food from home or having candy in front of the other kids, you need to address the mother so that whatever it is she chooses to feed her child in the morning before arrival occurs either at home or in the car.

After posting the above, 3 yo walks in and says, "I need chocolate". I reach into the fridge and give him a Hershey Kiss.

          What was I thinking??????

That sometimes kids are like grown-ups and need a chocolate fix to feel better?!

Seriously, I give out three or four chocolate chips per kid sometimes (and uh, take 3 or 4 per kid myself, ) and it's like someone flipped the switch on their moods.

Because I have no backbone! haha. I'm horrible with confronting parents about that type of stuff. I have another parent that I need to remind not to bring a sippy with juice for DCB.

I think I'm going to type up a note with these reminders and stick it in their bags.

May I ask why the fact that mom is a teacher makes a difference to you? Would it be less terrible if mom was the fry cook at McDonald's, or a social worker, or an architect?

(and I'm totally with you...not only is candy terrible for breakfast but Twizzlers are filled with red 40 which does awful things to some kids)

She just told me a couple weeks ago when school was starting that she is not looking forward to eating the school lunches. She said how horribly fattening they are for the kids and how much sugar they eat. Just seems a bit hypocritical to say that and then let your 2 year old walk in with pure sugar for breakfast. She's also complained about how her school aged daughter has 7 cavities...

Oh, I hear ya! Backbones are like oak trees, slow growing but wonderful once they get to a certain point!

One of the things that helped me while i was developing my backbone was to put rules and policies in print. It was easier to "say" something to a parent in a note or memo than just addressing it in conversation. (I admit, I was also guilty of handingout note right before they would walk out the door on a Friday at pick up time~)

I would definitely address the issue with mom and just tell her that it is difficult enough to teach the kids about sharing and when another child brings anything (food/toys/whatever) into your house that the other kids do not have it creates a bad situation for you.

If she continues to allow her dd to come in with food or anything, just practice using your backbone in little increments by saying something like, "Good morning, would you mind stepping outside untill ***X is finished eating. Thank you!" and then just smile nicely and walk away. Mom will more than likely start having her dd finish eating before arriving since she probably doesn't want to stand outside every day.

She's not giving it because the child is hungry. She's giving it so the child does not cry.

This girl's dad let her walk in one day with a handful of pennies. Seriously?! She was like 20 months old at the time. Anything to keep them quiet, I guess. I kept it and considered it a tip.

When she brings toys she's very good at sharing, so that's not too much of an issue. Everything IS in writing in my contract, I just don't think they read them. Definitely need to work on that backbone!!

I had a brother and sister come with gum for breakfast but I didn't know they had it, so when I go and serve breakfast the brother hands me the gum and I ask him where did he get it and he said his mom. Guess what I found stuck to my rug last night----yup the sisters gum!
