I have an almost 3 yr old dcb and he can be such a turd. Yesterday he ripped pages out of my animal book. It totally pees me off when kids destroy books. Nothing but disrespectful and destructive. He is constantly getting in trouble for walking on the toys. He is more than old enough to know better, it is just his nature to be destructive. Of course he got a long time out for it, but that does nothing to change the behavior, all time outs do is give the adult a little time to breathe. Time outs don't mean crap to kids. That is obvious from the behavior problems of today.

I read once that with kids who "feel" this need to destroy things it's sometimes best to give them something to destroy.
Examples included stickers stuck on paper. Stick a bunch of the little reward stickers on scrap paper and let them rip the stickers off. It's supposed to keep them busy for awhile and let them be safely destructive.
They also suggested filling a bin or tub with scrap paper, wrapping paper strips, newspaper, tissue paper, etc., and let the kids rip it up in the tub.
I might try some of these things after I went outside and brought the kid back in from hanging by his ankles in the big tree. Destroying books is a HUGE no-no.- Flag

I feel your Pain!
I have a 2 1/2 year old dcb who destroys things too. I dont know if he really is doing it to "be bad" but it is like that is just how he plays!?!?! He loves cars and I had a tub of those match box cars and finally had to put them away because HE IS TOO ROUGH! He would bang them and damage the cars and the furniture/walls. He will line toys up on the table and fling them all onto the floor just to do it again. I have some rubber people from Lakeshore and it doesn't hurt anything so I let him do it with those. He is also very destructive with books. I only have board books out and they get damaged SO fast. I have a little reading loft about two and a half feet off the ground and he throws them off, bends them the wrong way breaking the binding... and I could go on and on. I have had this boy since he was 5 mo. old and he is a real terror. ALWAYS getting into trouble. He is also the only boy I have in my care and the youngest. It could be he is bored or feels left out...I dont know. I am ALWAYS consistent with him and it is like he just doesnt get it!- Flag

I completely understand, I have a just turned 4 yr old dcb who is always breaking things too, not as much lately, oh and he walks on the toys too, that I always am reminding him it's not ok and he gets a time out. I don't think he's trying to be destructive he's just so rough with stuff, he'll push the cars but he pushes so hard on them it breaks all 4 wheels, stuff like that, oh last summer he did throw a big dump truck onto the pavement and it broke,he was in a hurry and tossed it, his mom made him bring 2 toys from home to replace it and he gave me a sorry card, nice of mom to do that. It's very frustrating.- Flag

I think sometimes it has to do with the parents. The one DCB I have now I kept working with him to play nice with the toys & I was getting NO where with him. I asked the parents to work with him at home & in a weeks time he was so much better. The parents did give me a look when I asked but I need to do what I need to - its better then him breaking them & them paying to replace it.- Flag

Yes it happens a lot and to all of us. I have a section in my policies that reads as follows:
"Intentional Damages
If a child intentionally damages the home, toys, furnishings, equipment, or other property the parent will be responsible for paying for or replacing the damaged item(s). The amount for damaged item(s) will be assessed and researched by the provider and will include only the cost of replacing the item, or similar item if an exact replacement cannot be found, and any fees such as tax, shipping, delivery etc. if applicable."
It stinks that I even have to mention it in my policies but after a continuous amount of toys and my furniture have been destroyed by the same little "turd" I had to add it in. Let me go to your house and stomp on your furniture and hammer at your toys, see how you like it- Flag
