Collections
Do some research on collection agencies in your area. They can operate differently from each other.
I use one that doesn't cost me one single penny.
I have used them twice over the past 15 years. I gather up all my paperwork/info etc and take it to them. The minute I leave their office, it becomes their problem. They charge all their fees to the day care parent. I have it in my contract that parents agree to this. They have to sign saying they understand that if an account goes to collections, then they will have to pay the collection agency...who tack on 40% to the bill before they even start. If and when the collection agency gets the money, they give me my part and keep the rest.
I had one mom who was on benefits and her day care was paid by the state. She didn't tell me or the state that she lost her job and kept bringing the kids to me all month. The state found out and told her it was an over-payment that had to be given back to the state. She wasn't the brightest tool in the shed and came to me and told me I had to give the money back! I told her that I had done my job and had been paid for it and that SHE had to pay back the state. Her state case worker of course told her the same thing. But this girl was so mad at ME and wanted ME to refund the state as "I had gotten the money".
She ended up calling social services and saying her baby was abused in my care by another day care child. She gave a name and a date and then got madder when we could prove that the kid she accused wasn't even there the week she claimed this happened!
Then she called the police and said my husband had been calling her 10 times a day and threatening her. She gave them our phone number.......which happened to be a CELL PHONE!!!!! A quick check of the calls with T-Mobile showed he hadn't called her once and she was sited for filing a false police report! (Like I said...not the sharpest tool in the shed!)
She was so stubborn, the state told her she got no more benefits until she paid back the overage. She still owed me two weeks notice and I sent it to collections. She owed me $180. She told me she would never pay it as I was "so unfair".
She didn't show up to her court dates, has moved all over the state and the collection attorney has charged her account for every second they spend on her case. She's had warrants out for her arrest etc. I finally got my $180! She owed the collection agency THOUSANDS by the time they were done!
But it didn't cost me anything but time. So check around and see if you have something like that near you.
