    Albuterol?? Whats it for?

3 weeks ago dcb starts coughing badly. It was a very wet cough but it sounded awful! I let dcd know when he picked him up that evening that he'd been coughing quite a bit and it sounded pretty bad. The next morning dcm called me and said that dcb sneezed and his snot was green. So they are taking him in and will call me and let me know what time he should be there at!!! WHAT!!!! Your kid just sneezed green snot and your still bringing him back to my house!! So I told dcm, well lets just see whats wrong first! She says okay and we'll get you a doctors note. Dcb shows up around noon with a doctors note saying he's okay to return to daycare and he's on albuterol in the form of an inhaler!

I'm not too familiar with this medication but they told me the coughing is just allergy/asthma related. Well then last Thursday Dad tells me that I only need to give it to him once a day now, then this morning he tells me he probably won't need it because his cough is getting better. My daughter came down with a very severe cold with very thick yellow snot within a few days after dcb started with his cold. All this kind of makes me think that dcb's medicine probably wasn't just allergy/asthma related and I'm really fed up! My whole family has been sick because of this little boy pretty much since the day he started and I'm getting so sick of it! This little guy was very obviously sick and I don't understand why the doctor would write a note for him to return to daycare unless the parents did some fibbing.... I am annoyed to say the least. I guess I just really needed to vent and wanted to know what albuterol is used for if anyone knows.

I have little capsules of Albuterol to give my asthmatic dck who is 5. I don't know what else it is for except easier breathing.

I used to go with the doctors note allowing a child back into care, now I decide if the child should be back or not but still ask for a doctors note just to tell me what the kid actually has but I am the one who ultimately decides if I will allow a child back into care for the exact reasons that you are venting about.

I give albuterol in a nebulizer to my son. It's to clear the lungs - usually for asthmatics if it is in the form of an inhaler. When my son gets even a little cold it can turn to pneumonia in a heartbeat so I have to be very on top of it.

Albuterol is for troubles breathing, primarily Asthma. Sometimes doctors will prescribe it for bronchitus and/or other illnesses where breathing is labored. I totally think the child was too sick for care if he had green snot, and that doctor should not have written an "OK to return" note. Shame shame.

Albuterol is just an inhaled steroid commonly prescribed to children for asthma...I give it alot.

I am glad they did the inhaler type to make it easier on you.

If, in the future, it is nebulized, just stand back a bit because it will cause your heart to race and maybe a bit of dizziness as you accidentally inhale it.

Most likely the child had a cold that exacerbated his asthma. Most physicians no longer feel kids should be excluded from care because of the common cold, that is why you got a doctors note.

The final judgment call will fall to you and your policies. You have to decide what is best for your program despite a doctors note.

My child has one for colds - has asthma and when gets colds with coughs, it's much worse because of asthma and needs the albuterol.

All of the above statement are true. I have asthma and also have an inhalor if I need it. I would make sure you have in your policies that you make the final decision regardless of any notes.

My son, too! Only uses his albuterol inhaler with coughs and colds....and also before and after swim class which gives him the same shortness of breath and tightening of the chest.
