    Infant Sleep

At what point do you get a 4 month old up from nap? He is sleeping an hour at a time, which I guess is pretty good for a young baby, but I'm thinking I would like him to start some longer stretches in the afternoon. Should I do some gentle sleep training or should I still get him up whenever he decides nap is over until he is a little older?

I would never wake up a 4mo. They aren't even reliably on a two-nap schedule yet at that point.

No no! I'm not waking him up! He's wakes himself up after an hour and starts crying. I have been ending his nap when he cries, but I'm wondering if I should do some sleep training instead. I just don't know if he's too young to expect more than hour nap out of him. All my other kids were awesome sleepers and at least took 2 hr naps at this age.

I think some kids are just cat napper type kids.

My own DD took solid 2+ hour naps (twice daily when really young) and my son slept like 30 mins at a time forever.

He still lives on very little sleep.

Anyways, I don't usually start messing with an infants natural schedule until they are between 8-12 months.
Otherwise they sleep for as little or as long as they want and eat when they want.

Has mom/dad said he sleeps like that for naps at home too?

Sorry; I misunderstood! I would leave him in for a few minutes, even if he's fussing, to see if he's really done or not.

I'd make sure he's dry and full before putting him down, too, but you're probably already doing that.

I would look up recommended sleep times for that age and ask the parents what he is doing at home. If he is not getting enough sleep I would consider sleep training. Naps are so so important for good night sleep so if they are having issues at home it would help. If he is sleeping a solid 12 hours at night he may not need longer naps.
