Hello. I've been doing daycare and teaching for awhile. I have more families that I had in the past than I do currently. Anyway, I went to get a bite to eat with a friend earlier. One of my former families was there. I noticed the mom, but didn't really want to make contact as I didn't enjoy them while they were here. Anyway, after waiting forever on the line, we're getting close to the front. The mom comes over. I felt something very phony. I cut her short. As we were leaving I heard the mom say "That's why you weren't there that long. I knew she wouldn't let us go in front". My friend and I were talking about it. My friend assumed if she was still with me, I would have let her and her kids cut in front of me in the line. I said no. I think children should learn to wait their turn and patience. My friend said she thinks from a business point, it seems like a bad idea. My question is this. Would have let them cut? What if they were a current family? Also, do you behavior different outside of your daycare when you run into families?

I am who I am. Sometimes that gets me in trouble...but if my dcf's see me, it's the same me they get at home.
Whether or not someone cuts depends on the situation. I don't in general let people cut, but I might if the situation was right.
I don't think I'm going to lose any business over it. My dcf's care more about how I treat their kids.- Flag

Weird. My best friend could walk into a restaurant and I wouldn't let her cut. I'm a rule follower.- Flag

client or not, it's rude for people to have expectations of others. You don't owe her anything.
I wouldn't even let my own mother cut in a line, it's rude and uncalled for. BUT because I am a lovely daughter, I would have already placed my mother's food order and paid for it anyways...- Flag

I'm so confused by this story. If I were to see one of my dcf out while I was getting something to eat I would say hi but the furthest thing in my mind would be thinking about letting them cut in front of me. I don't think that would be fair to the people behind me. Matter fact I'm the type of person had I been behind you I would've spoke up and said something. The only time I allow someone to go in front of me is at the grocery store if a person has a couple of items, I have a cart full of items and there's no one behind me.- Flag

You didn't mention if the mom actually asked you if she could cut in front of you or if you just assumed she wanted you to? How did you know that is what she wanted you to do?
Also, you said your friend assumed that is what the mom wanted but then your friend said it would be bad business practice....I'm confused as to why this would be bad business practice? What does cutting in line at a food establishment have to do with your daycare business and an ex-client?
You said "Also, do you behavior different outside of your daycare when you run into families?"
Allowing someone to cut in line is unethical to me. I have the same set of values within my work day as I do outside of work so I am not really understanding what you mean by that....- Flag
