    Unlicensed sent to jail?

Police said they arrested a woman Wednesday for operating an unlicensed Lewisville home day care, two weeks after a child died while in her care.

This happened in my state, but not near me. They said that there was no sign of foul play, yet she was arrested, is in jail, and has a $30,000 bond.

I've read it several times, and since they clearly stated there was no sign of foul play, I can't quite understand why she was arrested. I wouldn't think they would arrest her when there was no evidence of abuse, but maybe they do. They make it sound like she was arrested for having an unlicensed daycare. Huh, if that's the case, they could pay the salaries for several investigators just arresting the unlicensed daycares in my little county.

Is that the way the story sounds to you?

I couldn't read your article because the server was down for that site but I found this and also the bond is pretty low, she can bond out until they know the cause of death but maybe they are going on past history?

State documents show Bowie hasn't been licensed since 2008, when her child care permit was revoked.

Investigators at the time said it was reported that Bowie spanked a child because she had disturbed Bowie's nap. They also reported Bowie had children sleeping alone in closed rooms, including a six-week-old infant who was placed on her stomach on top of a pillow.

That may be it. This is the first I had heard of it, and it didn't mention any of that stuff. I'll google for the rest of the story.

I didn't mean to put this in the private forum. Blackcat, if you want to move it to the main forum, that's fine with me. I keep this tab open, and I wasn't paying attention to where it was.

In the link you posted it says "During the investigation, which is ongoing, police said they determined Bowie was operating the home-based child care facility without a license and placed her under arrest. The charge is a Class B misdemeanor."

Under the headline it also says: "Woman arrested on unrelated charge during investigation into child's death"

So although there was no foul play in the death of the child in her care during that investigation, they apparently found something they could charge her with, which was operating a child care without a license.

It appears that it is a misdemeanor (Class B) but still.... it was serious enough for them to arrest her rather than just issue her a citation.

There are wayyy too many cases coming up on the news about this kind of thing. After the tragic incident last week in my state where the 3 yo dcb died after being found in a brook, maybe I'm noticing them more often. But it feels like at least once a month another daycare is under investigation for a death. It's such a sad thing. No wonder people are becoming more reluctant about sending their child/ren to home daycare.

The thing is I also hear tons of things about centers, but people still think they are safer. Some MAY be, but not all.

This one just happened near me. He died from hanging from his head because he was stuck between a PNP and a loft bed.

We had an incident here a few years ago where preschoolers escaped through a hole in the fence and were found quite some time later playing on the railroad tracks .

Center or home, inattentiveness causes accidents.

It can also happen in public schools. Last year a local 5 yo, somehow wasn't connected to the bus he was supposed to ride home on and was found walking along a very busy road, no sidewalks, about a mile from school. They are all terribly scary and to have a dcparent hear things like this, how can we ensure them? How do we set their mind at ease?

In 2010, my FIL retired from driving a public bus. He said it was becoming alarming how many young children he would see attempt to get on with no adults. He often would question if they were alone and where they were going and often refuse to allow them to board. A little under a year after retirement, there was a story on the news that a like five year old boarded a bus to see a movie (or something stupid) and died shortly after. I can't remember if they were kidnapped or got hit by a car. I'm not forgiving or standing up for the people in charge (be it daycare or parents), but I don't understand how these things happen and no one reports seeing these young children all alone?

I read a different article about the story the OP posted. I will see if I can find it. Basically it said that the caregiver handed a deceased child to mom at pick up and the mom said " he's dead " and the caregiver responded " no he's not. " He wasn't breathing and was lifeless.
