If one of my DCK's just called in with pink eye, what can I do to be on the preventative here. He touched everything yesterday! Do I need to inform the other parents that there is a case of it in daycare?

I let other parents know that a child was diagnosed with pink eye so please monitor your child for the following symptoms.- Flag

It wouldn't hurt to call your doc and explain that your family has been exposed. Ours used to prescribe the drops so we'd have them on hand.- Flag

Ugh! Pink eye is horrible!!! It's so contagious and spreads so quickly! Especially with littles that mouth everything and share a lot of "fluid" with their peers and their physical environments.
The contagious period is 1-12 days BEFORE symptoms appear and while symptoms are present in some cases.
You can get bacterial pink eye which requires and antibiotic ointment or drops to cure or you can get viral pink eye where it's not treated but like the cold that caused it, just has to go away on it's own.
I have been lucky to not have it here (yet) but a few of our elementary schools have a TON of kids out with it right now.
Here is a technical fact sheet that we are given that helps explain it. I exclude until pus and crust is ALL gone.

I had a DCB with an older sibling that got it. He got over it and a week and half later his sister got it. The youngest (my DCB) hasn't got it ....yet..... but we are crossing our fingers that he wont....it says it take 1-12 days after exposure for symptoms to appear.- Flag

Pink eye isn't a singular disease. It's a presentation of several diseases.
Most likely it's an adenovirus. The same virus can cause cold symptoms, it just depends on how it's introduced. One child has a runny nose, sneezes on another child's hand, that child rubs his eyes, and boom. That kid gets pink eye.
If it's bacterial, it's probably strep or staph. They're usually viral unless they're really severe, though.- Flag
