    Upcoming Holidays

I know none of you probably want to think about the rapidly approaching holidays, but I need help! Which days do you close for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years? Christmas and NY are on Friday this year. I am thinking about closing Thursday/Friday for all three holidays.
Is that too much? My handbook states I am closed the day of the actual holiday but nothing about the days before/after.
I am sure I won't have kids anyway, but still want to give notice of closures by October 1.
    What are your thoughts?

Take them off. I take off thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Since I'm closed on Fridays I took Christmas Eve off, plus I close for two weeks for winter break. All paid.

Oh how I wish I could close for two weeks over Christmas break - here it simply wouldn't fly. I've had potential clients give me grief about the holidays I am closed

        I am closed:
        Thanksgiving Day
        Black Friday
        Christmas Eve
        Christmas Day
        New Years Eve
        New Years Day
        All of which are paid

If Christmas or New Years Day falls on a Thursday (as they did last year) then I am closed Friday w/o pay. I don't see the sense in opening for one day.

I am closed- Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, New Year Eve depends on if I have parents working it and then I close early.
I guess I need to decide if I am taking off the first Friday in October or not.... it is my son's first parent weekend at college!! (Yay!!) I may just close early.... most of my parents have some flexibility there. I am having everyone pick up by 4:30 today because I have a meeting tonight.

The majority of preschools here close for winter break (including the one I used to work for), so when I opened my fcc I decided to do the same. Plus the local schools also close during the same time. I also close one week for spring or summer depending when I want to take a vacation. Since I am closed on Fridays, I don't close for the majority of the federal and state holidays, so my families look at my closure calendar and think I do not close a lot of days

I'm closed for vacation time on all the winter holidays - first is entire week of Thanksgiving (I'll be in LA & Long Beach) & the 2nd is Christmas Eve-New Years
My parents are aware I close for 20 business days yearly ( 6 are Federal Holidays) because I list them on my website first week of January. No excuses when you have almost a year notice of my time off

Theoretically, I am closed for pay on holidays. I always add the days in between Christmas and New Years as vacation days. I am closed Fridays anyway, so this year, I feel like I am "losing" those two holidays; my vacation will feel very short. :-( Debating whether to tell parents I'm taking the Thursdays instead as holidays, but it feels wrong.

If your handbook does not reference that you are closed I would personally not close. I may ask how many planned to attend and if no one is coming then I'd let them all know that since no one is coming I am closed. I would revise your handbook next year/ or whenever you do updates and add what days you want off. Then make sure you cover that with your parents and new enrolls to make sure that they are ok with it.

                        I close for:
                        Paid vs Unpaid terminology
Paid- I am paid for this time
Unpaid- I am not paid for this time

Paid holiday closings: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
When the holiday is falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the acknowledged Federal/State holiday prevails; i.e. Christmas is on Sunday and the acknowledged Federal holiday is Monday December 26th. If your child is normally scheduled to attend during on a day that a holiday falls the holiday hours are counted towards your total hours for the week.

Vacation closing: 7 unpaid vacation days per year

Please respect that when my child care home is closed for vacation or after hours, I am taking this time to rest and to be with my family or just to catch up on home duties. I take my job very seriously and consider this to be a legitimate long term career. In order to accomplish this, I need this time out to maintain the energy level it takes to give your child the quality care he/she deserves.

I do reserve the right to close for any reason in which I cannot operate in a safe manner. i.e. loss of electricity, water, heat or in extreme circumstances loss of air conditioning, and medical epidemics. However, child care fees will be paid at 50% for any of these occurrences.
