What Does It Take To Be A Licensing Specialist?

Does anyone know what sort of skill set you must have to become a licensing specialist or to work in state child care licensing at all?

I've just been kicking some ideas around in my head about what I might do once I decide to stop doing daycare.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I would check to see if you can find a job description for your state.

I googled "childcare licensing job, wi" and found some old ones out there. Since there are no current vacancies, I couldn't find a new description, but I don't think government work changes much from year to year.

Same- I applied for a job but my degree is in ECE and I wasn't qualified, my agency REALLY wanted me to agree to take the classes to get a qualifying degree while I worked in a lesser position because they understand theunique perspective and skill set a former FCC provider would bring to the table. It's just not worth it for 1/2 the salary.

In my state you have to have 4 yr degree in nursing or early childhood. They recently had a job opening and it paid $22 per hour and you use a city vehicle and city benefits. Im sure that varies greatly by location though.

Job Description:
All methods of appointment will be considered and accepted such as list appointment, transfer, reinstatement, surplus, SROA, general reemployment, training and development, etc. However, possession of the minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Desirable qualifications: ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercise good judgment, communicate effectively and clearly, both verbally and in writing. This position requires frequent travel. Must be able to take laptop and printer to the field. This position may be subject to overtime.

Applicants must submit a 'Statement of Qualifications' for this position. The Statement of Qualifications must be limited to one - two pages and address the candidate's experience in the following areas:

. Interpretation and enforcement of policies and regulations

. Investigations

. Managing a caseload

Looks like Illinois requires a bachelor's in ECE and two years work experience in FCC or a center.

Each state is different. You would have to find out from someone who really knows the requirements for your state.

I was curious about that a while ago and thought that maybe I'd be interested in becoming a licensing specialist. I simply called my specialist and asked what the requirements are for the job. He told me some of them and then gave me the website address so I could read all the details.

I would suggest that you call your specialist and ask him/her what the requirements are.
