So I got a call today for child care. The mom sounds pretty great except her youngest is four and she has been a SAHM for 9 years. So none of her kiddos have been in care before and she is not real comfortable. She has a job though with HeadStart she is starting. Anyway, she asked for references. I only really have one to give her. I gave it to her and I know it will be a good one, from my grandma whose grandson I have while he is with her for the summer. My only other DCM right now is a hot mess, we have had many run ins about policies. Is one enough? I am thinking of asking DCD, but think mom may take over it. My only other one is the mom I termed who it ended bad with. What would you do?

I typically give 3, it was what was recommended in my ECE classes and typically what childcare jobs I applied to (before doing this) were looking for. Right now they consist of one past parent and two current ones. Do you have any old bosses, teachers, etc who you could use? Anyone you may have babysat for? Chances are they won't contact everyone anyways, at least no one who's enrolled here ever has. I guess they just like to see that I have them. One could be enough though, just depends on the family!

I totally agree. Ask someone you know if they will be a reference. I used to have reference sheet as suggested by my license agency and nafcc. I would be disappointed to find new parent never called them. In the eight yrs only 1 family called references. I don't have a lot of turn over.- Flag

I try to give 3. One current, one former. I have also used my neighbour who sits outside all the time and is able to chat about how I interact with the kiddies as she has a front row seat day in day out- Flag
