10 Month Old Gagging and Throwing Up

We have a ten-month old, he's been with us since 4 months or so. We are trying to get ready to transition him to the food program 1-yr-old food, no bottles, etc.
But every time we give him something other than baby food, he gags on it and throws up. His mom says he does this at home too.
Anyone had this problem and figured out a solution? Could it be a medical problem?

It could be a medical problem like texture aversion or something or he may just not be ready to eat solids (should be though). I have one dcb who has this, well he doesn't really have it now, but he's been through therapy for it. He would only eat certain foods and would gag and throw up with certain foods.
Mom may want to get it checked out.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I'll ask her about it.

        What have you offered him?

I would keep him on baby food a little longer, but make it thicker each time with cereal or some mashed potato flakes (if too much cereal will bind him up). Every few days, make it more dense, as he can tolerate.

How does he do with lighter crackers like Ritz or graham crackers?

He's doing ok on graham crackers, but if too much gets in his mouth he will gag and throw up too. This morning I tried very thin oatmeal mixed with baby food and water and as soon as it hit his tongue he would gag and open his mouth and leave it open until all the food gets splattered everywhere to get it back out.
He does this with Stage 3 baby food too.
We've tried shredded cheese, scrambled eggs, bits of tortilla or toast, to name a few.
MOm is trying at home too, with the same results.

Good question nannyde, I'll ask mom, but not that I know of.
Mom took our menu home when we told her we were going to be switching him to the big kid foods (now only 5 weeks from now!) and has mentioned that they are trying to give him things off of our menu - which would be what we are doing here too.
