    Behaviorism Therapy For Nail Biting?

Anyone ever hear of this? How does it work? Dr mentioned it to a daycare family this morning. I told the mom I think I'd try that stuff you brush on the nails that taste bad befor I did behavior therapy. Is nail biting a behavior or a habit???

I would consider it a behavior. It's a coping mechanism for me. For example, when I had to take my FIL to the hospital (sure that he had experienced a heart attack), I chewed off several nails on the way to his home to pick him up. I'm NOT a nail biter. I think it's gross. I haven't bit them since junior high school. When I am seriously stressed, I'll chew off all 10 nails before I know what happened. Even if I consciously try to stop, I just go right back to it.

I'm 27 and have shorter nails than toddler because I can't stop chewing them. It becomes a habit that is nearly impossible to break. The ONLY thing that works for me is to stop chewing one nail at a time. So i let one grow and chew on 9, then let a second grow and chew on 8.... I got to where I had only one short one left and then a family emergency happened and like previous poster, I bite when stressed so I chewed them all off the night of the emergency and I'm trying to train myself again

I have tried that nasty tasting stuff and other things as well. I CANNOT stop. My dh even used to slap my hand every time i was doing it. I also tried the snapping a rubberband on my wrist thing....no luck.
