Teacher's Kids

Question about teachers kids! I am interviewing a teacher tomorrow and I think she wants to keep her kids home in the summer and not pay. How do you handle this??

On one hand I wouldn't mind the lighter load, but I would mind the less pay and then having to reprogram the kids come august.....

To keep their spot, mine pay 1/2 price and can attend 2 days/ week. Same with spring and fall breaks. Christmas is my paid vacation with 3 holidays added.....so they pay. Always looking for other ideas though. I usually have more teachers kids than non teachers kids.

I had one family that I told must attend 3 days per week in the summer (I would be making $45 less per week) and they said that was fine. They stayed here 4 weeks this past summer and then decided they did not want to do that and only wanted to pay for the school year.

My other teacher family that has stayed with me left for the summer, I filled their spot, and then transitioned him back in when one left for Kinder. If I had no one leaving for Kinder then they would have been out of luck but that was a risk they were willing to take. I actually did no reprogramming and the child came back to me MUCH BETTER than before! She pays full price for all holidays and such, just like all the rest of my clients.

I tell my teachers that I can't afford to go without an income for the summer. If they want a guaranteed spot for the fall, they need to continue to pay for it during the summer. If they want to take the chance that their spot will still be available in the fall, they can have the summer off at no charge but I will be actively trying to fill the spot. Most decide to pay for the spot and have kid free time during the summer to do things like yard work, closet cleaning, professional development, relaxing....whatever they feel like doing while their child is with me!

I have teachers pay a monthly tuition August-May. For June and July they are not required to pay. I always fill their child's spot with a school age kid or I usually have at least one kid leaving for kindergarten in August, so I fill the spot in June instead of August and then when the teacher kid comes back after the summer all of my spots are full. Hopefully that made sense??

This boils down to what works best for YOU.

I do not charge for breaks/vacations. I DO charge for holidays and snow days (that I am closed for) I also charge teachers a slightly higher tuition (I change the contract to reflect what THAT families rate is - every family has a different rate, so no one knows what another family pays ) This works for me as I prefer the lighter load since my DH (teacher) and kids are off. Often I take that time off as well. Another benefit for having teachers is an earlier close time. I tell teachers I close at 4:30, but most teachers pick up around 4:00.
Some people have teachers pay year round regardless. I wouldn't be able to keep clients that way.
Some have them pay for a day or two over the summer to keep spots. Did that and it was a pain to try to coordinate when the child could come (between their vacations and my vacations, etc.)

My teacher families pay full price for all breaks during the school year and then pay 1/2 price for 2 days a week during the summer.

Is there a market for summer care? In my area, I have kids that only come during the summer (have since I opened), so having school year kids works out perfect for me. Maybe you could offer to hold the spot over the summer as long as you can fill the space.

I never charge. I really think it's important for kids to be home with mom or dad in the summer. I'm grateful for the great teacher families I've had, they've paid on time, generally dependable and great hours. Now I know not all teachers fit this, but mine have.

They pay over breaks, snow days, etc., but not during the summer. I always have picked up kids for the summer, or an older child will be going to kindergarten and feeing up a spot and new child stays. Works for me.

I dont charge for summers but this works for me because I have my own three schoolagers here during summer break and I need the lighter DC load. Plus you can often find summer or temp kids. I will take summer kids as long as they are the same age or younger than my kids and they can be reasonably quiet during nap time watching a movie or whatever. I dont take older schoolagers (above 7) who get way too bored with the toys and activity here.
