    Infant "Pattern"

Every infant I have cared for, including my own and other people's, has followed some sort of basic pattern that I was able to predict, for the most part. My nephew has a two-hour play-eat-nap pattern, sleeps for about an hour almost every time, all day long. My own children did similar things, for varying amounts of time, and all of them have had a clear pattern AND cues for what was going on.
We have a new infant, 4-mo. He's only been here a week, but I was hoping he had a similar pattern to everyone else's and I could quickly pick it up and use it.
But this child has #1, no visible cues to ANYTHING - I can't tell if he is hungry or tired or what - he goes from happy to crying in one milli-second. And #2 his pattern is all over the map. I don't need him on a schedule, but I DO need to be able to predict his needs somewhat so that I can tend to the rest of the crowd! This week his morning nap has been: 8 - 12; 9 - 11; 8 - 10; 9 - 11; and 8 - 11. He has eaten 2 oz at 9:00 am; 6 oz at noon; 10 oz at 11:30; 2 oz at 1, etc. His afternoon naps have been even crazier - starting at 1 or 2 or 3 and lasting 1 hr or 2 hours or 3+....
Does anyone have a suggestion for me?

yeah......put him on a schedule. That's my suggestion.

I'd encourage 4-6 oz every 3 hour. When does he get up before he comes? Eat?

Do you and parents have a notebook to send back-and-forth? I usually do that, and the parents are expected to jot down what happens at home. I want to know when baby comes in my door how much he's eaten and slept. At the very least "how much did he drink this morning and when?" would be helpful.

Keep in mind, he is in a new environment that changes his schedule. I agree with the 3 hour eating schedule. I ask in the morning when they last ate, and go 3 hours from them. I have a new infant whose mom brought her home schedule. Eats 2 oz every hour, after which she takes a 15-20 minute nap. Nope doesn't work for me, starting first feeding waited 3 hours and she ate 4 oz. Has been on that schedule ever since. Which also helps with sleeping. Slept 45 minutes morning nap and has been taking 2 - 2 1/2 afternoon naps. They adapt easily when young!

I would LOOOVE this baby on a schedule, but right now I'm hapy with anything!!!
His mom says he last ate at 5 am... but when I try to feed him at 8, he is not interested.
I'm wasting so much formula and so much time trying to get this kid to do things that he isn't interested in doing - feeding and/or sleeping.
TOday he got up at 7:30 am. Yesterday he apparently got up at 7:00 am, and the day before he was up at 6:30.
I think the parents just ignore him until he cries and then drop everything to feed him or put him to bed... but that doesn't work for me.
I like the notebook idea, I will have to get one of those going.
Otherwise I think I have to put a date on the calendar

There ya go...of course, he's all over the map there if he's all over the map at home. I bet there is a pattern. Having a notebook may help you find it.

Definitely will try this. Should I be suggesting that they try to keep to a schedule at home?
