This is something my husband has been tossing around. We did an addition to our home about 3 years ago and now we are considering putting in a woodstove which would be in the daycare room, which will take up a considerable amount of space that I'm not happy about, the addition we did for my daycare area is a total of about 600 sq ft, but we really need it since our electric bill goes through the roof. Putting one in am I taking too much room away from the daycare and also IF we do it are there gates of some sort that you can get to put around them?

My sister had one in her livingroom that was used mostly for daycare. She had one of those big play gates that went all the way around it and the state was fine with that.

Mine though is in my basement luckily
it heats my entire house (1008sqft) all winter without ever touching my electric heat thermostat

I love my woodstove too, we got a new furnace last year though and my heat bill was 57 bucks a month. so Im ok with keeping the woodstove as a secondary method of heat,.. if Im sewing or working in the basement I fire it up, or if its bitter cold, but it works so well that if its over 40 in the day it heats the house too warm. Mine is in the basement too,. not sure about having it in a main play area. I would definately gate it off.

Oh cool, I'm a little nervous about doing it but with all the tax credits this years we're really considering it. I'm just so disappointed that in my "new" daycare are I'm going to lose that space when I wish we made it a little bigger to begin with
We have only electric and even after we put in our central air which was cheaper than our wall units we're heating about 1650 sq and our electric bill is over $300 during the winter months, it kills us, so it would really be beneficial. We thought about the pellet stove but by the time we buy pellets we're not saving a lot of money just convenience so we decided on the woodstove. hey thanks ladies.

Just a consideration. Do you have any kids with asthma? Will it effect them?Comment

Uh yea my husband::, he does have asthma but they used to have a woodstove growing up and it never bothered his asthma but thank I'll look into it, as of now none of my kids have asthma.

my son has asthma too. doesnt affect him either. i asked my hubby and he said "as long as its an airtight" it wont bother anyone. (whatever that means... ) i think it has something to do with it not "leaking" smoke.
just another thought, too. it gets really dry in here, so i run a humidifier during the months we use the woodstove. my FIL wont pay the electric to use a humidifier, cause hes cheap
so he keeps a pot of water right on the woodstove. of course, he cooks his dinner there too

this might be a stupid question, but i don't know bc our last house (a rental) had horrible weatherproofing and a 4-500 electric bill, and the house we have now which we own already had double paned, nice windows in it when we got it (so, i've never paid for windows) - and our bill is around 100-150 at the most.
is it a lot cheaper to get a wood stove than to have new windows? and if so, is it a difference worth not dealing with the worry of the stove?Comment

Maybe a silly question but if you have a woodstove do your clothes end up smelling like you were at a campfire or is that only if you have a fireplace? My sister runs her fireplace at her house frequently & whenever I return from her house when it was on I smell like a campfire & I don't like it! Just something I was wondering about! As a parent if my kid came home smelling like campfire I would not like it!Comment

We have all new windows through the house and we just had new insulation sprayed in the attic when we did our addition, we did it through the WHOLE house not just the addition. Part of the increase in electric bill (which is all we have, no gas just electric) is that when we did our addition we added almost 700 sq ft. which obviously increased the heating
I dont' think with a woodstove you would smell like a campfire because unlike a fireplace the door is closed. We have friends that have one and it doesn't even smell like that in their house.
That's a good idea about running a humidifier, I thought about running one this winter anyways because there is so much static and my hair will stick to my face::so I thought about getting one. They can't be that expensive to run are they???

Ours is easy to run.
Our house does not get smokey.
Our electric bill does not change in the winter because we don't touch the heat.
Our outdoor smells strongly of wood burning stove but it is different than a campfire smell.
Our indoors does not smell like it but our basement has a little bit of the smell.
I LOVE the smell.
I had a daycare dad say that he was very concerned with the smell. After I explained it is completely safe he still said he was concerned and I told him "too bad" in not those exact words.
and she is still here and he has learned to deal with it.Comment

I always mention my sons friends too,.. something about 5- 19 yr old boys seems scarier than 5- 19 yr old girls.
