Do DCKs Check Out Library Books?

We are going to start making monthly trips to the library as a group.

All of my dcks are under 3. I was thinking about having the parents sign their children up for library cards so they may choose a book to take home.

My concern is the children may Be too young to care for the books properly, or that the parents will forget to return the books and then the next time we go, that child wouldn't be allowed to check out another.

Is it better if we go together and choose books to keep at daycare?

Do any of you have a system for how you visit the library?

    Thanks!

All my DCK have library cards. They are not allowed to take the books homes. I think it's a great idea.

We don't do field trips unless we can walk so no library but I sometimes get books for them and keep them at my house.

I foresee a lot of problems if they take them home.

We have a bookmobile come here 1x a month we do a circle time and them they all check out books. It is up to the parents but all of them check out. The parents decide how many.

I had one family that did not want to but it was ok

I would not want them to leave the books here. 1 the parents need to be reading to the children daily and this promotes it. Plus then I am responsible if something happens to the book.

Licensing has such strict transportation rules that I don't do field trips to library or anywhere. I have offered book bags with a puppet/stuffed animal related to the book to my children periodically. It is pretty fun! The kids are very excited when we do that and they know they can't get another bag until they bring the first one back which helps in keeping up with my materials.

We go to the library once a week. I pick up holds (I use the inter-library loan system and online catalog A LOT) and scan the new books and the kids browse. We make a pile on a table of everyone's choices. Sometimes I weed out a few (I'm a meany who doesn't bring home tv/movie/toy tie-ins), but mostly I check out what they want. The books stay at my house.

The parents in my program read to their kids already. I would do it differently if I didn't think they had good books at home.

This is how I did it when I did trips to the library. Our library doesn't usually issue cards until the kids go to K (in fact our school has a field trip each year to the library for just that purpose) and I like that policy. I know there is no way I could keep track of everyone's card, what they took out, when it's due, sending multiple reminders home to bring the book back for library day, etc.

I guess I did not realize how lucky I have it. The bookmobile jr is a WONDERFUL program for childcare LOVE IT. Plus they have my favorites on board cookbooks and resource books.

They issue a card in the child's name tied to the parent but after that they do not bring the card it is linked on the computer to the childcare. If they forget the book I usually ask for them to renew it but it is the parents problem not my responsibility. My 4 yr olds are now asking to go to the REAL library and see it . LOL

Wonderful program I am real lucky
