    How Cold is to Cold?

So I have seen some of you closing for snow days. It has been cold in where i am but no where near snow. I have been keeping the kids in because last week I got a parent who commented on how cold his daughters hands were. Well they need outside play. The 2 kinder kids I have are not being allowed to go out to play at school because it is "too cold". We do have wind where I am at it was only 7mph today it was way bad monday.

So I feel like they should go out and play tomorrow. It is supposed to be a high of 59 with the 5-10 mph wind. The wind makes it feel colder but they need to get the energy but even the schools are keeping them in.

What do you guys think? keep them in or let them play?

"Too cold" at school has a lot to do with how much gear has to be put on to play comfortably. Their outside time is so short, it's not worth the time to get it all on, or to lug it all to school.

Properly attired, 59 is comfy. (If it were springtime here and 59, I'd be keeping them out all day because it felt so "warm!" In fall it feels colder because it's new, but still, I consider that a pretty warm day for outdoor play.)

Absolutely take them out. 59 is warm. Too cold would be depending on age and wind chill. Usually between 25-30 we go out but in two short spells. Above 30, it's a free for all.

If dcg hands are cold, then they should wear gloves.

All by parents are putting 2 jackets on them and some are bringing gloves. It is only cold here because we are used to the heat we get. The only thing holding me back was that the kids were not going out at school.

Tomorrow is walking day so I think we are going to do it!

At 59 my kids would be taking their jackets off and asking to put shorts on ::

          Really, though, they would.

Kids get warm running around. 59 is absolutely ideal playing outside weather.

This is the coldest it has ever been around here. So the parents are all worried about them. The wind can be bad around here but even with the wind tomorrow it might feel about 50

It gets 100 here and that's temp not counting the 100% humidity in the summer.... And gets in the teens with 100% humidity in winter. Still they go outside. Even at school. All they need is a light jacket with a. Temp of 59 and that's only for the cold natured.

What do your state regs say? Ours suggest we decide using our local school district's guidelines which here is 20 with windchill. Put socks over their hands if Dcd wont supply mittens. My kids are much healthier and happier going out, I would never let a parent decide for me.
                  I see little people.

I read it's like 85-35? Otherwise limited to 30 mins? Something like that. I have been waiting until the afternoon to take the kids outside because it's way too cold in the AM here, 20-30's. 50's is plenty warm enough to be outside. If parents say their kids hands are cold, then they should bring gloves! All kids here have at least a sweatshirt or jacket to wear but not heavy gear so we wait til 3 after nap time.

I have to say that I always chuckle when temps in the 50's and 60's are considered "too" cold. It was in the low 30's here yesterday and my group was out at least three times for a 1/2 hour each time. We were pretty well bundled - snow pants, coats, hats, mittens and boots. But still. I even sent the school kids out for a 1/2 hour after their snack. Too cold for me would be under 15 degrees with a bad wind chill. Otherwise if it's 15 and sunny, we would be out at least once.

Like others a temp of 59 would be hours of outdoor playtime here.

We go out as per our school board's guidelines of not outside if colder than -15*c. If its colder than -10* then we dont have playtime outside; we only do the school walk in those temps. Warmer than -10*c and we happily play outside. Yesterday we were out playing and it was -8*c (17*f).

It does really depend on where you are and what they are used to. 59 at this time of year where I was raised in Ohio was considered to be a heat wave, . My parents used to tell us there that we could go out if it was 20 degrees or above.

Here in S. Florida we don't really have much cold weather. My first year here it got to about 30and they let the school children inside instead of line up outside in the morning before school because many people here don't have winter coats (some do though). So it all depends....

I used to work at a shelter & as long as the temp. was in double digits, we went out. This was in Anchorage, though.

I am in Ohio and I was going to say if it is below 20 we tend to stay in!
