    Question About Feeding

New dcg is 10 months old, sibling of SA child I used to care for. Dcg is large for her age, but is breastfed mostly at home. In a 9 hour day, dcg only consumes about 6 oz of breastmilk in a bottle. I have tried pushing back and forward feeding times, but it doesn't seem to alter the amount she drinks -it 's always 6 oz. Dcm says their nanny had the same experience, but dcg drank even less for her. She is on solids, and dcm packs a protein and some kind of veggie each day. The thing is, dcg is a screamer, has trouble napping, but is very happy when eating solids. My own kids are bottle fed, and consume double the amount dcg does. Isn't dcg supposed to get most of her nutrition from bf at this age? I am close with mom, and she is somewhat open to suggestions but I guess pedi said 6 oz at daycare is fine. I think dcg would be happier overall with more breast milk, but making more doesn't seem to matter. Any ideas why this would be? Maybe someone that breastfed can speak about this? Tia.

Is mom only sending 6 oz or does she send more than that? As long as you are offering her another feeding there isn't much more than you can do. If mom is only bringing 6 oz, I would ask for another 6 oz.

Many breastfed babies will wait it out to get it straight from mom so that may be what she is doing. I'm assuming she is making up for it when she is home with mom.

Thanks for the response. Dcm packs a little extra just in case, but dcg never drinks more. She doesn't sleep through the night, either, and I am thinking this is all related.

Sounds to me as if she is just reverse cycling and getting most of her milk from the source. As long as her urine output is good there is nothing to worry about. My son had brick dust diapers a few times in dc, which worried me but, he was fine. He just didn't drink a lot from his bottles either. He would avg about 1 oz per hour, sometimes less. He waited for me.

Thanks. Glad to hear others have experienced something similar. I can't help thinking she would nap better if she was a little fuller, but happy to hear this is something other kids do, too.

At 9 months, you might try offering a cup. Maybe she'll take more if she doesn't have to **** it from a bottle. At that age, I'm typically transitioning from bottle to cup here anyway, and the kiddos are pretty much feeding themselves finger-foods.

I agree, when my son was just 4 months old I went back to work. He would eat with me before care, when I stopped by at lunch to feed him, and he would wait for me to eat when I got off. So one feeding over 8 hours... He nursed all evening and all night long after that
Baby is probably doing something similar, so just offer and let her be. I like the cup idea too.

Ugh, my kid reversed cycled. Refused to drink much at daycare but nursed all night. Didn't sleep through the night until 18 mo. Not much I could do, couldn't force her to drink, she liked it from the tap. ;-)
