    Which Client Would You Take?

I recently termed a family, one FT dcb/3 because of a lot of issues that combined were just too much. (no nap, not picking up when sick/trying to get around my illness policy, they were actively looking for a center prek, refused to help with his therapies and apraxia, etc).

I have ONE child on my waiting list that is PT but needs an additional 2 days, but do not want to give up a FT space for PT income.

I interviewed with a 19m old. girl, advanced for her age, can speak simple sentences and followed her mom's 2 step directions. She sat and listened while I read her a story. Parents are first timers, have a SA child who attends the school bef/aft program. Expressed interest in him coming here as well, which I politely declined (I have a SA opening but am allowing my last SA to age out and will not be replacing them).

6:30am-3:30pm M-F (I currently open at 7, and would charge them extra for this)
She gets a bottle at nap, which I said I would not do. They were ok with that.
Leaving current provider because she significantly raised her rates. When I asked what their rates were----they are what I would charge them. I did discuss it with them, their issue is apparently bc she contracted for one rate ($25/day and then 3 months later bumped them to $40/day).

    Next interview:
would attend 4 days, understood that they would have to pay for 5 and could use it when wanted/needed.
newly turned 3yo boy, has attended a center daycare and is being bit (has 3 bite marks in various stages of healing right now!) Parents want to pull w.o the required notice, want him to start Monday.
6:15am-3:30pm- are asking that he come and lay down until 7:30ish, which wouldn't be a problem. Didn't love my rates, but love the program. Dad said "you get what you pay for" to the Mom.
Not potty trained, goes only when prompted. Discussed PT policy in depth, they were agreeable to it.
Takes 3 hour nap (brought sheet from daycare to 'prove' it)and want him to rest. Sleeps from 8:30p-5:45am.
Sweet kid, little rambunctious but that's 3yo boys for you.

    I currently have 4.5yo girl (losing to K next fall) 3.5, 3.5, 3.5 (boys), 3.5 (girl-PT) almost 2 (girl-PT).

Who would you take? I am getting ZERO calls right now, and this is the sum total of my calls that turned into interviews from advertising like crazy for the last few weeks!

Personally I think the child from the center sounds the most promising.

Maybe the potty training issues is due to the center environment...kwim?

Also, because the dad understands getting what you pay for....that speaks volumes sometimes.

I also think that they have a right to pull without notice if their child is being bitten and it hasn't stopped. I would do the same. So that is understandable.

I don't know which would truly be the best or right fit for you but just from what you've written, I'd go with the little boy.

second the vote. Good age, good reason to leave previous care, etc.

The first parent are pulling because of rates, but yours are the same. They'll enroll, then decide you charge too much, look for care, and leave you high and dry. Or at least that's a possibility.

The boy. Fits well with your group age-wise. He naps! The little girl may not adjust to not having a bottle at nap.

The only thing that sticks out to me is the early times. I did the 6:30 thing for a while and then she needed to switch to 6:15. That 15 minutes killed me. I lasted 2 months and that was it. Mind you, if he will lie back down then you're golden!

I'd go with the boy too; the age would fit perfectly w/ the other kiddos.

Agree with all the others. I'd take the boy, just based on the parents.

That's what I was thinking, too. His speech is clear and he was polite without reminders. The rambunctiousness is age, new place, excitement, little boy energy. They really did love my program, especially that I share photos with parents and the outside time. They are nervous about how he will do with circle, center time and structured activities since he has never had those before, but I do allow the kids to chose their centers/partner and I have only had issues with two kids in the past that were too wild to participate, and so wild that they disrupted everyone (the one I just termed, and the one that went to K this fall).

Mom does want to see my group in action, and I did tell her that I don't normally allow it but she could stop in if I decided to accept him into care based on her concerns over supervision. His current center is a wild free for all while the teachers stand in one corner, one of his current bites they weren't even aware happened! There are TEETH MARKS, this child HAD to have screamed and is verbal enough to tell you the particulars!

Phew. Time to send an email saying that I have completed interviews and would like to offer them the space!! happyface I cannot believe I filled the space at ALL, let alone so SOON.

Just wondering...what age do most of your kids leave your program? If they stick around until k, I would take the boy everyone else suggested. Otherwise I might go with dcg #1 since she is young, seems pretty well behaved, and will need daycare for several years.

I have been sending them off to K and keeping the ones I really like ( ) when I have a bef/after school opening. The SA child I have was with me from age 3 1/2- now 6. I have only been in business 7ish years.

                      1. If they are willing to pay full time rates, that is a given choice.

                      2. Sounds great. 2A If the time won't effect your kids or marriage go for it. 2B I agree with DCM.

                      3. This one sounds great, too... with the same time addendum above.

I'd go with who signed and paid first in your shoes.. Run it like Ebay... ::::

Ugh, that is what I get for starting a response, then walking away to mop. Congrats on your choice.
                      - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

I was going to initially say the little girl, but I love that age and I have all boys and only one girl, but the boy sounds like a better fit for your group.
