Help! New Infant Had Rough First Day

I started a new baby today, almost 3 months old. The morning went well, then everything took a turn for the worse.

Baby is breastfed and Mom brought plenty of expressed milk. Baby took the first bottle, but would have nothing to do with one after that and spent 3-4 hours of non-stop crying. I could do nothing to soothe her, she then became overtired and gassy. I rocked her, left her alone in her crib, cuddled her etc for 3 hours and she would not stop crying!! She finally took a 2nd bottle but 5 hours had elapsed since the first one...and she was so distraught by that time, I just could not get her mood to improve. I was also really careful to follow the parent's instructions on temperature preference etc of the bottle, but it was a nightmare.

I have a feeling that she doesn't get a bottle at home much, and am concerned about how long it will take her to adjust to daycare. I made it very clear that she needs to be totally comfortable with bottle feeding. I think she really missed Mom's special goods and the comfort it brings to her.

My other kiddos hung in there today, but they certainly deserve more attention from me than they received today. Any suggestions?

The only suggestion I have is to hang in there. I love babies (would actually rather have them then toddlers) but they are alot of work to get used to someone other then mom. It could be alot of things. Bottle is one (It sounds like you already have a handle on talking to mom about that). Alot of times I find that parents hold the baby 100% of the time so that could make it an issue for you in regards to being able to put her down and have her be settled. I would sit down and talk to mom about what they do at home and see if you could find some of the same comforts (with exceptions of course) that you could apply at your house. Good luck and I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

See if mom can bring in a shirt she wore or cuddle up with a blankie for the baby to use just for feeding and falling asleep. Obviously, you would want to remove the blanket after baby falls asleep or you could swaddle baby in it.

It takes some time! Don't give up! I also recommend wearing one of
Mom's shirts. My DS used to carry my shirts around when I wasn't home and he was here with dh. It was comfort to him to smell me too.
