Thanks so much for your replies! Our new girl will be a big girl, too - she is a Great Pyrenees. I had planned to take her out often and to plenty of places. I think I just need to hear you all 'say' this is going to be fine!

I am trying to attach a picture if our new girl - she's a cutie!

Beautiful!!! I am sure it will be great. I also agree with a PP to crate train- it will help you so much during the puppy phases when you can't keep an eye on everyone!
Let us know how it goes!!

          She's gorgeous!

A few more pointers as she is a giant breed......

Keep her away from stairs as long as you can until she is fully grown. Stairs are VERY hard on growing hips and can cause a lot of damage.

Obedience train as soon as possible. It only needs to be the basics, but she MUST know who's boss. A giant breed dog who doesn't listen is a nightmare.

Use the best food you can afford. Those giant bones need good nutrition.

Bathe (or at least wet her down) fairly frequently. Until she is used to it ans accepts it. Trying to bathe a giant dog who doesn't want to be is not as funny as it sounds. If you do it regularly when she is little (even with just water) she will get used to it and be easy to bathe when she really needs it.

One of my Saints was a show dog and people were shocked at how easy he was to bathe and groom. But it was only because he grew up expecting it.

Thank you, Meeko! I needed to hear that! Our current dog is (literally) 3 pounds, so this will be a big adjustment for me. I wanted a big dog to go on walks with, so here's praying I keep motivated! Good idea about the bathing too. So much to learn...

I just want to add how thankful I am for this forum. I don't post often, though I do read often. I can't tell you guys what a help you are to me!

            Have a great weekend!! happyface

I think the best thing we ever did for our jack rat mix girl was to enter her in esd training through a local trained expert when she was still just a puppy.

My dd ADHD psychiatrist recommended one for her. My dd picked her out and off to training they went. This dog literally changes every life she comes into contact with.

Not that I don't love my weenie dog, and the dck all do too.

But Roxie is just special. Very special.

She goes to nursing homes and hospice centers sometimes. Not as much as she used to though because of time constraints.

She's 8 now and still acts young.

Here she is sitting on the walker with my special dcg that's a heart baby with a feeding tube. Ky was crying and Roxie responded immediately to the precious little girl.
